Thinking about getting this promotion which i notice has been extended to 23/12/2012. I'm just worried about the really poor customer service feedback you see in online forums, and also the slow speed, which is also criticised.

I am confused about the speeds a bit.

I have just got this data of my speed from the SS speedtest...

Download Speed: 3432 kps (429 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 658 kps (82.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Packet Loss: 0 %
Test Server: us-la

taken about 4pm Wellington... (i have seen DL speed at 3.9mbs)

This is fast enough for my needs and i see SS customers posting DL speeds of 17-20mbs here(?!). Compared to mine thats insanely fast right?  So am I missing something here? Also, I think these speeds of SS customers that i have seen posted here arent during Peak time(?) which is the relevant time. ( i did ask SS cust service what peak times were and he just said when people get home from work to about 10pm but didnt sound confident in what he was saying)

Im pretty much just a browser. I watch movies and video streamed from US. But do have to download stuff now and again. Poor customer service issue aside, anyone have any thoughts weather this would be a good deal for some like me?

appreciate feedback

thanks

Other people have posted images of speed tests done to our local NZ server, the test above is done to our LA speedtest server.

You represent SS? What are peak hours? and what can I expect my DL speed to be in off peak and peak times if I am just browsing?

thanks

If you just do browsing and the occasional downloading why do you need an unlimited plan, surely a 20-40gb would suit you better?

By browsing I also include watching movies... stream from USA (i assume)... youtube also... and Skype video calls (tho haven't done that in a while). Last month usage was about 45gb just over half way through the month (no Skype vid calls either). Also im interested in this because of the cost... $60/m which can be still cheaper than for 40gb/m elsewhere.

Apart from the hassles I had getting connected (Maxnet Naked DSL -> Slingshot Clothed Line was a mission!) the connection has been stellar.
Crazy fast, consistant and bloody nice pings to BF3 servers and basically half the ping I had with Telecom/Maxnet to World of Warcraft. All while not having to agonize over every byte. I can turn on Steams auto-updates again.
Double-plus good.

It depends in what exactly you are doing.

We have arranged things that "Attended" traffic such as Skype,Youtube,Browsing,Email etc have the highest level of prioritisation this is becuase these types of traffic you cant wait. Traffic such as HTTP downloads and downloading from bulk download sites such as Rapidshare are also bumped down the list, and right at the bottom is p2p type traffic.

Becuase of the nature of the Unlimited plan its almost on peak 24/7 however there is a higher demand period around 5pm - 11pm during this time there may be a notable difference in speeds across many protocols however for applications such as youtube/skype/browsing there should be no notable difference.

Thanks
Bevin

every such site I've ever used has imposed a speed cap on free users to encourage membership, does anything on the ISP-end of things even have an impact on that? (I mean, I* get a speedtest at 11mbps?? down, I download a podcast from libsyn at a solid 700kbps, and if I use a hosting site it averages around 100kbps (about 20-times faster than dial-up, if I'm not confusing my bits and my bytes). rarely will hosted files go over 3-times that (i.e., as good as a quarter of what speedtest says I should be able to get). Heck, I've noticed that youtube seems to cap their stream speed at about 1mb, too. So, does any ISP priority settings contribute to this, or are these so low that ISP constraints never even come into play?

We have not noticed any slow downs at peek times, which does surprise me a bit.
So TBH this is the best value internet ever.
