About a week ago, Orcon changed something.
Now the Youtubes are faster than before.
See this screenshot:

Does anyone technical from Orcon in this forum know what was changed, and could maybe explain it?
I'm happy about the improvement, and I'm curious to know what happened.

Thats a substantial upgrade! well done orcon. Better caching perhaps? 1080p wouldnt be such a strain anymore.

Im not with orcon but its quite amusing looking at your youtube history, something catastrophic happened to my connection there for a couple of days :)

On second thoughts; The curve isn't what I'd expect to see if that were the case.
It's a very sudden, marked increase with no "roll on".
The rest of AKL and NZ didn't show any corresponding increase.

If it were because of reduced load, I'd expect a gentler incline upwards, and I'd expect to see the rest of Auckland and NZ's curves to mirror the same change.

It seems to be just Orcon, and it's a sudden increase as if something was changed that improved the bandwidth as soon as it was implemented, whatever "it" was.

I have noticed that Youtube speeds have improved. I am now able to watch 360p without waiting!

Orcon quite possibly have a Google cache box now, I certainly haven't seen any reference in the past to them having one.

The boxes can make a huge difference since all traffic stays locally rather than originating in Aussie, on my TCL cable connection 1080p videos will buffer at ~15Mbps so there are never any issues watching HD content.

I had info from a tech at Orcon over a year ago explaining back then that they had a Google/Youtube cache. I can't find the reference to that in my old emails to copy/paste the quote though.

Also, today I watched a brand new 45 minute Youtube video, that has JUST been uploaded by the user, and it streamed in 720P without clipping. Nice one! That would never have been possible previously from where I live.

An update, a few days later.
The Youtube speed is still faster than previously:

See the Yellow line, which is Orcon. It suddenly got faster at a specific time in December, and has remained consistently faster since then.
My speed is the black line, and while it is up and down a bit more, as it is a sample of 1, it's still averaging faster than all of the other averages.
Good stuff!

Yeah we were trailing their youtube cache at least two years ago now, so they've had it for a while. Perhaps they do have a larger and better connected cache now as our speeds have also jumped up just as the screenshot above.

Unless my data usage stats are severly delayed, I think Youtube is zero rated on orcon.

I've been streaming over last few days at least 2 GB and no increase in data usage.

But interestingly it doesn't even appear in Uncharged column of data usage stats.

Well I reset my router and the data usage stats on Cosmos have updated and still shows only a few MB usage in last couple of days - here's hoping there's some screw up and it slides by as I'm close to my cap!
