A VF person knocked on my door today. Six months ago it was telstra offering the same as I get with orcon for the same price so why would I move? I didn't.

   I am on an orcon plan with a phone and 120 gigs of data (orcon@home with 20 gigs + 100gig addon), all for $180.

   So, I have ignored the doorknockers for a while. Today the offer was phone, 120 gigs data, sky upgrade to myski hdi and it costs $120.60

   What rock have I been under, when did the prices change that I get more for $60 less?. Is this to do with isp's doubling their data a little while back and it looks like orcon have not?

   I cant find any plan even close to that much data at that price with orcon.

Make sure the plan is in the correct "type" - if you have a cabinet around or not will make a difference in how the plan is offered, and how much it costs.

Thanks, if you mean vodafone, I checked that I am in their redzone so I won't be on telecoms gear and should be OK.

   The guy that came around was the typical sign up tonight but a quick check told me it wasn't a deal, it's the standard pricing from the VF website.

   I have been with orcon for at least 5 years but $60 difference ($75 because of sky) I am not sure why not this time? Unless an orcon person knows there is a more comparable plan for me.

ISP's change their pricing periodically over time remain competitive.

Snap and Telecom refreshed last year, Slingshot a few months ago. Vodafone refreshed theirs fairly recently, same for Telstraclear... Orcon and Xnet haven't refreshed their pricing for quite awhile.

You get the gist.

If you're not within a contract term it pays to check around every now and then for better deals.

Anyway the cheapest ISP is not always the best... some ISP's are purposely priced higher because they are higher quality eg: more engineers, more international capacity per user and less issues.

And thats why Im still with Orcon, I dont get the large data caps (an upgrade would be nice tho ;) ) but I get reliable and fast service.

No thats not right, if you are in the Red zone and fed from the exchange but infact in a cabinetised area, you will be at a serious technical disadvantage and there will be a $10/m or so difference to set right.

Yeah best to check your address on http://chorus.co.nz/sat

Under "ADSL2+ Details" it will list a "Service Area" eg: xxx/Exchange or "Cabinet Name eg: xxx/x if you are on a cabinet.
