I amasking this on behalf of my uncle who was recently in Fiji which he visited regularly. He has a nokia 3120c which is on 2 degrees. When in Fiji he found that he could call locally in Fiji but not back to New Zealand although he could call 2 degrees customer care who were unable to help.

When he tried to call NZ he got a message that was along the lines of " You are not authorised. . . "

I Thought it might because numbers were not saved as plus +64 but on checking the phone they are. I would also have thought that if roaming was not enabled you wouldn't be able to make local calls in Fiji.

My understanding is with a previous phone and same SIM there were no issues.

Any thoughts on possible solutions would be appreciated.

Our customer care number (from overseas) is a +6422 number, which you said he could call. Sounds more to me like the local carrier had issues.

Hmm. well he did say that he used about $30.00 credit talking to customer care so he must have been able to call them. So then is there not a lot that can be done other then ensure that numbers are dialled in correct format ie +649?

Calling rates are much cheaper when using a Fijian sim card; even on international calls. Just ask the locals and I'm sure they'll be more than happy to help :)

He Does have a Fiji Sim but it tends to live in Fiji so i think the main issue is from the Time he arrives at the Airport till he arrives at the residence.

Did they try calling the same numbers from a local SIM, a different phone or try with 0064 instead of +64 at the front of the number? What carrier were they on when they tried to call?

He probably does not have enough credit to pay to receive the call. For several complicated, boring reasons, the two legs of the call cannot be properly correlated in our IN. The MT leg is rejected with reason of no credit, but the MO leg only knows that the MT leg could not be connected, not why. Hence you end up with a generic it's-not-working announcement instead of a nice 'the person you are calling can't be reached right now' announcement.

I imagine he is getting your texts, but again if he has no credit he won't be replying.

He also is using a fiji sim on his other phone. Will my txts get through to that sim and can he reply back?
