Pretty much on the verge of changing from orcon, however I noticed this

Mr Bartlett said the speed boost, and cheaper wholesale rate, would lead to higher data caps for Orcon’s 100,000 retail customers, but would not put a time frame on it.

Do we have a time frame on this ?? Weeks ?? Months ?? years ??

Times are changing.. hell I have not purchased a box game in years with digi distro being the norm now.

I mean geez.. last few games purchased online (Origin/gamersgate)

Battlefield 3 - 15gb
King Arthur 2 - 21gb
Star Wars The Old Republic 20GB

Thats more than 55gb for only 3 games .. add in streaming movies/tv/news/ .. you get the idea..

tl;dr: will orcon be changing any time soon ? :) :)

Yes also waiting for an increase. I have an 80 GB allowance but in the last few months have been hitting about 120GB a month.

If I were on Vodafone's Ultimate plan with the double data option I'd be ok, but it's getting more and more expensive for me to stay with Orcon. My contract is up in April so hopefully something will have been announced by then otherwise I might be jumping ship if our usage remains high.

I am using Slingshot's unlimited plan for my data leeching requirements and I think that $60 per month is reasonable for as much data as I wish to consume.

Orcon has plans that go up to about 300GB I believe. Why not just get a larger plan?

I got their 'Best Deal Ever' promotional plan when it came out last year so I can't upgrade until the contract ends in April. But as it is at the moment Vodafone would be $120 a month for phone and 120GB broadband, whereas Orcon's normal pricing is $155 a month for 105GB or the next step up is 205GB for $235 a month.

So something needs to happen for them to remain competitive.

Because the data $$ is rediculous

Sure I could get 300GB, however that would be $320 a month...

hell I could get a TB and that would cost what.. $1720 per month...

But yeah, Orcon do need to review their plans, especially the lower end ones, 5GB gets you very little in this day of streaming video, games etc - Id be happy if they moved the 5GB plans to 10GB.

Even my parents who dont do much on the internet cant survive on less than 5GB these days.....

It's pointless waiting for an ISP to refresh their plans, they do that on their own time frames and usually aren't very public about when.

If you want more data now for less change ISP.

Like other Orcon users, I was on the verge of switching ISP's given that Orcon's current non-genius plans aren't competitive at the moment. Telecom's bribe of a free Tivo on top of paying less for the same datacap is extremely tempting.

However (for now), I've decided to stay with Orcon, given that other than paying less, I have little guarantee that the service and the quality of service will be any better elsewhere. I get great downstream speeds now of around 2 MB/s off peak international, and around 1.5 MB/s peak international. , and in general no complaints whatsoever.

I'm assuming that Orcon't won't be updating it's regular plans soon, as it's probably trying to "encourage" users to switch over to its genius product.

I called Orcon this afternoon and gave them the 30-day disconnection notice.

Just like what you said, I am actually quite happy with Orcon (I think I have been with them for more than 5 years now, probably more). However, I don't think I get a great deal because I am not using Genius.

For me, I don't save any money switching to Telecom. But my data cap will jump from 15GB to 60GB, why not?

Any by the way, I don't have much faith with Genius. I don't want to get into a situation when both my internet and phone don't work.

POTS/PSTN is old fashioned, but they seems to be more reliable. =-)

I wonder if they'll ever make switching ISP's as quick and easy as switching electricity providers. I.E. no downtime, no disconnection, everything is transparent, and no change in the quality of service.

You can't compare electricity and power. Power cables aren't VLAN'd off.

Yeah, I signed up online on Sunday 12th afternoon, and Telecom has already sent me a modem (I have it with me now)! Impressive.

Actualy switch over wouldn't happen till March though.

I'm hoping we see better data prices soon. At $150 for 50GB of traffic, I'm feeling a bit ripped off when for $99 in Whangarei, I could get 150GB of data at 50Mb/s symmetrical (fibre). I get that fibre and DSL are two separate beasts, but it just seems that with a variance like that there must be room to move. Maybe it's time to call my account manager.

I am on “best ever deal ever plan” for $90. 40gb, phone which seems pretty great deal for quite a while.

during XMas, a telecom boy knock the door and offer me $95 for 60gb incl. a phone rental. a few days later,

telestra give a offer on facebook saying $75 for 40gb incl. a phone rental.

I could let those two good deal past just because i am still in the contact.

Orcon definitely need a new plan to make current customer stay.
