I saw a friends mate comment recently on Facebook that they were around town for a few days as they were installing 2degree tower sites in and around Ashburton. I've been checking my phone every few days since to see which network I was on... Vodafone... Vodafone... Vodafone... 2degrees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And on checking the google map of cell sites linked to from Mauricio's article New Zealand cell site location maps I see there is a 2degrees cell site only 1km from home, and a few more splattered across the county. YAY 2degrees!

Does this mean I can now buy 2degrees Mobile Broadband Zone Data Packs for use around Ashburton?

Interestingly the map shows them also having a couple of sites around Mt Somers and Methven, even though there are much more heavily populated areas that they haven't yet built out. Hopefully this is an indication that they eventually plan to cover all the major holiday spots and state highways so that they can cut the apron strings from Vodafone.

Yea good to see them expanding coverage. Although they don't update their mobile broadband zones very often!

Chances are you won't be able to use broadband zone packs until they pull the trigger and say so, this was the case for hamilton anyway, the whole city was covered and tested for about a month or so before the zone pricing went live.

If you are in 2degrees coverage, the broadband zone packs will work. A town isn't 'officially' added to the zone list until the coverage is finalised and optimised. Otherwise we risk people being told they are in zone, only to be possibly out of zone when the optimisation work is complete.

However even then the coverage maps are conservative and you may find it works fine anyway.

How will we find out when we are "officially" in zone?

Any idea when Whangaparoa can expect 2D coverage rather than relying on Vodafone's tower ? :) (Which is across the road from me yet I still get dont decent signal off it)

This is great!
I just hope they come down a bit further to Timaru soon. There isn't really any decent Vodafone coverage in West Timaru from about the Wai-iti road roundabout onwards. You may be lucky enough to get a bar or two of 2g in elevated areas. Would be amazing if 2degrees came along and fixed this problem!
