Hi

Is interleaving turned off by default on Orcon Genius connections? if not is it something that they will turn off at my request?

Currently getting 18ms pinging to www.orcon.net.nz is that within expected latency is interleaving is off?

Thanks

Where in NZ do you live?
in general interleaving is larger than that.

I doubt its interleaving.
Are you having issues or just want to know if its on?

I can ask and let you know the default..

Cheers wasnt having issues as such, just wanted it off for gaming.  I contacted Orcon and was advised that it was turned on, got it turned off and now pinging 7-8ms to  www.orcon.net.nz :D

Quite apart from the fact you have had it turned 'off'... Interleaving isn't simply on or off... It can be applied independantly to the upstream and downstream paths, and it can vary between very small amounts and quite a bit - and the upstream and downstream interleavings don't have to be the same.

Some interleaving is usually a good thing. Given your pings went from 18 to 8 (ish) indicates that the interleaving you had on the line previously was pretty minimal. Personally I would leave it on, even for gaming, if your game servers are pretty close (under 30-40ms RTT)

Cheers - N

Interleaving has 3 options on a Chorus Wholesale connection.

High (default) - 16ms

Low - 8ms

Off - no delay

I have no idea what rates Orcon set their DSLAM to if it's a ULL connection.

Is that something like a marketing measurement?  Wouldn't nterleaving would normally be measured in depth?  A time measurement as it appears here doesn't really have much meaning, based on a variable packet size.
Or is it just the worst case serialisation delay a customer could expect?
I guess it could hide some of the complexity as well, maybe?

Maybe my milage is varying...

Chuckle... you're right, but your mileage is varying... These numbers are 'about right' and mean more to most people (including most ISP employees) than the real thing :-)
