I am using Orcon Genius and have just experienced a power cut. As expected the Genius is dead in water without Broadband but I rang my phone from an external number and instead of it being re-directed to Voice Mail I get a message saying the number called is not in service.
Does anyone know if a power cut in the house with Genius   should stop the voicemail system back at Orcon
I tried ringing the support line but gave up after hanging on for ever.
I then tried sending them a support ticket and get an email back saying they aim to answer within 5 days?

I wonder if this is because the handset is handling voicemail, rather than the platform itself?

No idea but if it is then I do not think it is any good. With the number of power cuts we have these days if the system can not divert to voice mail when the destination callers is without power then why would you want a system like that.

Genius has the VM built into the modem, it's not in Orcon's voice core. Because of this there is no way a call can divert to VM if the Genius isn't connected.

This has been made pretty clear in their marketing, but obviously is a downside if you have no power.

Correct, the platform should handle voicemail for scenarios such as this (the other two big competitors in this space do exactly that)

Might pay to call Orcon, I could be jumping to massive conclusions and it may simple be a misconfiguration on your account.

I am sure your last paragraph was a joke. No one in their right mind calls Orcon unless you have hours of time to waste and nothing better to do.
I the above answers are correct then it is a pretty useless system. Although I am in NZ largest city I can have power outages almost monthly. If the phone system is down during power cuts and people cannot leave messages then something is just screwy.
That would imply that calls have to come into the phone wait till they are not answered and then get redirected to Orcon Voice Mail.
Surely someone has come up with  a better system for voip than that.

I have just had a quick look at orcon website I cannot see anywhere the caveats  that warn against voicemail not working during power outages.
Nor do I remember Orcon saying anything about it at sign up time.
If you know where it advises public about this I would appreciate you pointing my in the right direction
Thanks

Haha that is utter fail in this day and age, a step backwards almost from the old POTS system. Man Orcon's "VOIP solution" is utter crap. I get emails from them literally every day telling me about faults or emergency maintenance because of issues. Glad I don't use it.

They have, VFX. You can set a divert to voicemail (or any other number you choose) on "unreachable" - i.e. unable to contact the CPE modem / ATA etc. for whatever reason, including power cut.

Of course, I'm making an assumption that the OP is correct in the assertion that VM falls over due to it being handled at the local end - if this is not the case, then I'd expect a similar setting to be available on Orcon's system somewhere.

Do normal answer machines built into landlines need power to work also or is it all able to be achieved down a phone line?

I would assume this would happen if you had a handset or box at home that relied on power to take messages. But I've never put much thought into it. Missing messages doesn't really bother me during power cuts since they hardly ever happen, not in your case though!

Are you in CHCH? Crazy to think you have power cuts so often if your not!

Kind of off topic but I wonder why they couldn't have a battery back up that at least kept you phone up for 24 hours?

Certainly if you have a Telecom answering service it takes your messages if your phone is there or not.
and No I live on the Shore in Auckland and I agree in this day and age we should not have so many power cuts but we keep getting them.

Yes that is a possibility though it might have a drain on it as I have the phones plugged into the genius modem so it would try to keep them up as well. If orcon do confirm that their system wont take voicemail during powercut then I will have to investigate UPS
