plas: Since being swapped to a Genius white a few months back I noticed the same thing happening. Ended up just using 8.8.8.8 and forgot about the problem.

On a slight side note, while 8.8.8.8 works like a charm I highly don't recommend it for normal day to day use, the closest Point of Presence of Google is in Sydney and due to this all your DNS resolution will be for CDN's based in Sydney or further away and may reduce your general internet browsing speeds.

This is also another reason why Orcon will be keen to fix this if it is a wide spread problem.

Set back to 8.8.8.8 and loaded as expected.

Thanks for the example.

For future reference, nslookup takes just the domain name, eg mail.google.com - if you pass it the whole URL as you did, it will always fail. Cheers.

if you're still unable to reach the site, can you perform a trace route to the site as well?

What time did you try to load the page, and it failed? And how much later did you run nslookup?

I did it straight away, but I did notice by the time I had saved the file in photoshop the gmail page had loaded, I quite often get the same scenario on the google landing page as well. And the only way to make the page load when it does happen usually is to change DNS. Maybe I will try a ipconfig /renew next time to make sure it is not something else screwy. I did reset my browser with no change.

Looks like you have ipv6 enabled (which is great!).

Can you disable it in your network settings and see if the problem represents itself.

I've had a similar issue for months now and a modem restart always works. Web browsing will die but IRC and flash video streams stay up. Tried ipconfig /flushdns with no effect. Tracert attached, I tried a bunch of sites and all with the same issue to the second hop.

Edit: I should add that waiting will sometimes resolve the issue but I'm not usually patient enough for that!

OT slightly, I had a customer on an orcon connection, on northpower fibre, and they had the exact same intermittent DNS issues.
The customer and myself spent many hours on the phone with orcon about it but they just kept blaming our equipment.
They also had below par speeds for what they were paying for. Their plan was 100/50 but they only ever got about 70/40.
Again orcon just kept saying it wasn't their problem.
I spent many hours trying different configs and replacement equipment with no change in the problems.
As we supplied all the equipment and server I couldn't charge the customer for any of my time so I was out of pocket.

Eventually I managed to convince the customer to switch ISPs, which they did, and problems went away.
No more DNS issues and they get the speeds they are paying for.
No equipment was changed either.
This was almost a year ago now and they've had no issues since changing ISPs.

It's quite normal for the BNG (your 2nd hop) to not respond to ping requests, or to respond slowly, not sure if that's related.

And you are saying when this happens you can't browse any sites? It's not affecting just a specific site/sites?
