After a couple of years I have had no issues with the Dish TV A2 recorder that wasn't fixed by rebooting the machine.

I was a little concerned to hear the HD spinning continuously even when turned off on the remote. Dish TV said it was a characteristic of the Android OS.

Today however the unit was dead. After testing the AC/DC converter on the power lead with a multimeter, it was clear it had died.

Has anyone had this problem and can recommend a replacement power supply? (Output 12v, 2.5 Amps)

I have yet to have any of Jaycar plug packs fail that I have bought to replace failed ones supplied with equipment.  So this should do the job:

Many thanks, that looks an excellent replacement at a good price.
Fortunately, Dish TV have a sale on at present. They report that their power units seldom fail, but a replacement adapter in their sale is $24.99 incl delivery. Reduced from $54. We will give it a try. I just hope the HD is OK Thanks for your prompt answer.

You probably don't want to wait for the shipping but power supplies are super cheap on Aliexpress:

I love AliExpress as much as the next Geekzoner, but when it comes to mains powered items there is a lot of rubbish out there, and a large proportion of them don't comply with NZ standards. Like US/EU plugs, for a start. Even if it's apparently C-Tick certified I wouldn't trust it without opening it and checking the internals. Counterfeits and dodgy quality builds are rife.

So unless you're an EE and know what to look for, buy one from a local retailer. We have electrical safety standards for a reason.

Yeah nahh, Dont ever get standalone adapters from aliexpress. They will often not even match the picture in the listing, have a sort of AU style plug but non compliant pins, or worse the picture is an actual AU plug but they send a US (or even worse again the EU type) adapter and a poorly made deathdapter to make it fit.

Then there is the fact that they often start with a good design, but ruin it in a redesign to have 0.5mm creepage distance from the high voltage DC side to the output side, and then discover they can save a few microcents by leaving out the insulation layers from the transformer.

Big clive has done a few teardowns on china adapters, so has diodegonewild.

OH FF, I give up, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FIo7eMI0hU is the link. embedding never works on here.

Adapters with products are usually a lot better, since they are sourcing them and sending them out to resellers around the world, but even then I have had some duds that I dont trust with DVRs etc.

Thanks for the heads-up. I have used AliExpress for quite a few bits but delivery times are a killer and I'd be very nervous about electrical stuff

I have had success with vehicle LED lighting though...

Our A2 hard drive recently failed after about 3 years of daily use. It is powered directly from our motorhome 12V battery and is disconnected and rebooted often several times daily to conserve energy.
I replaced the drive with an SSD. Operates perfectly and the frustrating 60 second or so boot up "Media Scanning" notice has been reduced to about 2 seconds.

Good move with the SSD replacement. The cost of these Dish TV A2's are quite high and I have wondered why SSD's aren't standard now.
Did the SSD require anything other than a swap? Special formatting, software etc?

Any chance you can remember the model of ssd drive. Sounds like a worth while upgrade.

Samsung 870 EVO 500GB SSD SATA

PBTech. About $108.

I decided that 500GB was more than enough for our recording needs. The 1TB was never more that 20% full.
