Just set up a someone’s new Dish android box on a dumb TV. It’s the newest model. Downloaded new firmware, updated all the apps on Google Play including the Freeview app, and very disappointed that channels are missing. It’s connected only over Wifi via their wireless broadband plan. Have set up many android TVs before and never struck this issue.

I feel bad as they are totally non tech and I had assured them this would be foolproof and easy to use. Instead I’ve left them with Freeview that’s missing channels. In the meantime have shown them how to watch some channels via the TVNZ+ app for now until it’s figured out. It was too late to contact Dish.

The other thing I noticed is that pressing the Freeview button it doesn’t jump to the Tv channel but idles in darkness until you press OK.

Has anyone had this happen and is there a fix or do they reset and take the box back.

Can they not just use an antenna? its so much less nonsense involved.

Thanks, no they live on top of a hill in an extreme wind area and house is triple storey. Aerials have constantly broken so they had rabbit ears which worked fine.

The point is that the earlier model Dish TV have Ch 1 and 2. Mine all have all the channels which is why I’m thinking of returning it and getting the older version.

Answer.

I’ve managed to get in touch with Dish technician. This new android TV box has 'Live TV' embedded in the remote so if you press the Freeview button on the remote, it won’t play any of the TVNZ channels. He said they are working on a fix for this, something to do with licensing.

The only way to get all the Freeview channels is to use the Freeview App from the App Store. This app has all the channels, (but the Freeview button on the remote won’t take you to them).

One has to ask why Dish have now put Live Freeview sans TVNZ on the Freeview remote button and not Streaming Freeview with all channels as before which worked well.

The original Dish box and dongle which I own have the Freeview App (not Live) embedded in the remote button so all channels worked with one press so easy for older non savvy folk.

Unsure if the button can be remapped or not, but this maybe beyond my talents.

Amongst many others I have and use a Dish TV A7080 box here in our motorhome.

TV1 and TV2 display perfectly.

Samsung 32" TV

Wifi - Netspeed wireless broadband plan or Spark phone hotspot.

All software up to date.

Freeview app v1.9.42 > displays "freeview" logo for 2-5 seconds > last channel opens automagically and runs as expected including TV1 and TV2.

Just tested now a few times and working perfectly.

I installed the free version of "tvQuickActions" app from the PlayStore and programed the remote control "freeview" button to open the "Freeview Streaming TV" app. Again works perfectly.

Kodi and a couple of IPTV apps also perform well.

A relatively slow box compared the many here.

Is yours the rectangular box or the new square one. I have the older rectangle one which snaps to attention fast. They appear to be called the same. Dish A7080+

It is the square model.

I do have an older rectangular SmartVU+ A7070 box in hibernation here somewhere.

If wind is an issue for an OTA antenna, they should consider getting it installed inside the roof.

There are available from the likes of Harvey Norman under eave external antenna and some failing good internal antenna that are not "rabbit ears" I didn't realise they were still a thing, these may be useful for you.

I will show my age now as I remember all too well teh rabbit ear dance and gymnastics to get those abominations work.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
