i am really interested in one of these, but what worries me off is having a whole forum dedicated to one product does not inspire confidence in the product, are they that complicated to use or are they prone to the odd hiccup?. I guess as well one thing that gets me thinking is would anyone use one once tv3 and tvnz both have chromecast or apple apps?.I see there is great support for this forum from Dish but then again it is their product. If you were a betting man would you put your last $ on one of these or go for a Panasonic or hold out hope that one day TVNZ will have an app that can be watched without the need of an hdmi cable?. Really the only reason i would need one is for coro and shorty for the wife

The forum discussions here on Geekzone are on a Intermediate -Advance geek level, we discuss a lot more technical than most of the other forums we have a base on, The units are not complicated, in fact majority of the message we receive note that they are simple to use, as this has been in the market not close to a year yet there are the minor issues that the software devalopes which is what conducts these forums for fast response.

Again the satBox S8200 has the TVNZ and TV3 and Maori TV apps on these products and has room for a whole lot more apps, so we have ensured we have added useful features for the box including DLNA client sharing for media playback on smart devices and  PCs so the S8200 is not simply a "PVR with Freeview" and just that.

The box is HbbTV ready and is ready to go live when Freeview feels its time to add the service to satellite.

of coarse personally, Chromecasts are a great way to get everything from the device to the TV, I use it and love how BBC iPlayer and All4 use this in the UK.

I have had one of these units for four months now. It is a great machine and never misses a beat, having apps for on demand is a winner. Totally recommend it. Some of the complaints in this forum, if you read between the lines, seem related to poor signal issues rather than the S8200.

That said, we are watching broadcast TV less and less ... Thanks to Netflix.

I'm an electrician who installs dishes every week. I'm also an advanced computer user and class myself an expert on all things electronic as I set up tv's, receivers, set top boxes all the time with work.

Whilst your surmise that some of the issues may be signal related, Ie recordings not there, blank recordings and the box acting funny may be because the signal dropped out, may be correct and signal may be the issue.

But that does not explain the issues both others and I have had.

Such as sound dropping away after fast fwding through ads. Double recording etc.

That said Josh is passing all our feedback on and they are constantly making upgrades, the last ones seems to have improved performance and response a fair bit although having come from a mysky box I am still disappointed they can't get the response and some of the layouts better.

I do believe this product needed a lot more beta testing before full release

I understand, It takes longer to add support for casting like Chromecast, perhaps studios should understand that broadcasters will request the permission for the licence to include Google Cast support. Please let us know if you do choose to look at the S8200 and your thoughts.

dirtydutchman: Also regarding q3 above. Yes connected via HDMI. When turning the tv off it also puts s8200 in standby. When turn tv back on I also need to cycle power to s8200. Sometimes it will wake up straight away but more often it completely reboots which takes at least 1 minute before picture shows and then longer for it to actually be ready to show EPG per say.

I believe it needs to store EPG in the background instead of requesting it when you push the button.

Also when changing channel it tells me everytime that it is live recordin. .. I know that I don't need reminded every time I change channel. The banner is just annoying.

Also again the time shift display on the box is a waste of time. I'd rather see which channel number it is on. I know I have enabled time shift. Again don't need reminded. I simply want it to record in the background.

Was there any fix for turning off the TV also switching off decoder s8200 into standby? Thanks.

I have managed to figure out that you can turn the s8200 into standby when you turn your tv off. It does not go into standby if it is recording something though.
If I then hit the power button on the s8200 when it is in standby mode it will also send a pulse to my TV turning it on.
Much as when I am watching TV someone else on Netflix can tell it to stream to the Chrome cast plugged into another HDMI port and the tv will change to the Chrome cast HDMI channel out of the blue.
Very annoying when the kids are watching on a tablet and they want to be funny.
Yes I can turn this feature off but I also don't mind it

Thanks for the reply. So is that a feature that can be turned off on the s8200? Or is that related to HDMI control on the TV? Because currently the s8200 is hidden away in a AV rack and customer has to guess if the unit is off or on.

Josh may have an answer before I get a chance to look.
I do know I have auto sleep turned off but I vaguely remember something about HDMI control in the menu somewhere.
I'll take a look and get back to you

HDMI-CEC (or HDMI Control) is no longer in the recent software versions, I am unsure why that is though. It used be under the Video Settings.

I meant that I am sure that I've got latest software and the HDMI control still works. Perhaps we can no longer turn it off. I've yet to check my video menu though or check my version I'm on.
I just know it updated last week sometime
