Just to get some informal experience/advice before I proceed with attempting to receive DVB-T signals.

I have a gbpvr system under XP The CPU is a modest Sempron 3000. I have purchased but yet installed a Hauppauge HVR-3000 card. I also have and not yet installed a Sapphire HD 2600 XT video card which purports to do hardware decoding of H.264 video.

I also have the Cyberlink H.264 codec. Assuming all installs okay, is it going to be relatively straighforward to be able to view and record the DVB-T signals without choking the CPU to death. I am hoping that the decoding of the H.264 will be offloaded to the video card.

recording h.264 is no problem, you only decode the h.264 when you view it (and hence, your cpu will only get hammered when you attempt to view it).

my 3700+ 64bit amd struggles to decode the 720p feed of TV2 using VLC media player (it will decode it ok if I don't do anything else). But I think thats mainly to do with the vlc codecs being rather average.

I'd be interested in how you go given my recent experiences - 64bit AMD 3400GHz choking on the decode. I've decided to sell all my current kit & start again with stuff that I know will cut it. I was very surprised that it couldn't cope (AMD Athlon 3400 754 CPU & ATI X1950PRO 512MB VPU).

Hmm - that sound promising. So I could record using say gbpvr and then play it using my PS3 which has more than enough grunt to playback H.264. The problem will be I suspect, the PS3 apparently won't handle files > 4G and I am sure a H.264 stream for an hour will be more than 4G.

Don't know if the source material is HD or they are just upscaling.

They are definitely upscaling. It looks much nicer than our sky box though! Just doesn't have the clarity of HD.

Why would they be doing that? I would have thought that TVNZ could have at least sourced their material in HD.

edit: Especially big-ticket shows like Desperate Housewives/Grey's Anatomy.

1 and 2 are live in Wellington as well. TV1 News looked very nice - it's just a shame sub hasn't released the new version of GB-PVR yet so we can get the audio! :-)

I heard that TV3 will go live very soon as well, hopefully they then don't go and shut the network down once testing is complete so we have to wait until the official launch!

with the latest ffdshow tryout (http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/) I can get audio on the channels, but not visuals...

has anyone got a free codec that will decode the picture? (not vlc)

ffdshow is based on ffmpeg which almost has working support so expect an update sometime soon.

What is needed other then dvb viewer and powerdvd ultra to view these? (oh, and the grunty cpu, but I want to see it work before spending on a new gfx and/or cpu+mobo)
