sbiddle:
richms: Is there an alternate source of EPG for dvbviewer since kordia are being stink and not offering the proper DVB one? Seems to me that its a reasonable piece of software so will probarbly get a licence for it.

I don't know if they are really doing anything wrong. They made it quite clear from the start that MHEG5 would be used for all EPG data. This isn't a proprietory standard so it's just to up developers to include it in their products.

I believe the only reason that the DVB-S service transmits the full EPG on the DVB stream is so it could be used with existing Sky boxes without requiring major firmware upgrades. With the spat between TVNZ, Freeview and Sky continuing however we're not likely to see Sky using the Freeview MUX's any time in the near future!

The actual reason the kept the EIT EPG on DVB-S was the 20,000 existing STBs in the market. Sky don't use any of the freeview EPG for channels they carry. They actually generate their own EIT data for Parliamant/Stratos/Maori and Cue.

EIT on DTT will only carry now/next information, with MHEG-5 providing the 7 day epg.

With now way to schedule from what has the functionality of a fancy flash animation the EPG is as good as useless.

I would rather look on paper and then put the times in from that then have to scroll thru the onscreen ones.

Once they get a way to put entries into the recording schedule then it will be of use, as of now its just fancy teletext asfar as I am concerned.

edit: typo

Any official PVRs launched later in the year will use the onscreen MHEG-5 based EPG to setup their programming.

The MHEG-5 data is relatively simple to decode, and I already have support under Linux for two implementations, one inside MythTV and one standalone. Just need to extract the data into something we can use for programming.

Yeah, but there is nothign stopping them from chaning that data structure along the way since they are also sending the application that decodes it. I would just feel a lot better if it was sent in a known standard rather then having to do what is effectivly just as much a hack as scraping a website for the information.

Guess a dvb-s card in the machine could pick it up off D1 when not doing something else.

How long does a tuner have to be on the sat before all the EPG has come in? I know that on sky you often have to wait 2-3 mins from turn on before its guide is populated properly.

Part of the reason for the delay with Sky is the time it takes to transmit 7 days of EPG for all of their channels.

For MHEG-5 there is a defined standard for the EPG data as this is what the official PVR manufacturers will be relying on. Hence it should be reasonably reliable. The bit that will change is the GUI they use to display it.

I've been having some issues with my usb tv tuner that I bought from Australia (digital now), I think its faulty, but I'm going to give it a little longer. It's got really wierd problems. The other day I could record (and watch with VLC) all the channels fine (so long as I was using tuner 1, I believe tuner 2 is faulty), but as of today, I can't view the recordings that I record.

Perhaps they changed something else when they changed TV1/2 to the 720p versions of the 'proper' live tv1/2.

Can everyone else still view recorded files fine in VLC ? (note: you have to have recorded them in the last day...). my vlc player crashes when trying to open the new recordings.

thanks

Did a fresh scan tonight, on TVNZ mux can find all channels with the exception of TV2.  TV1 is in upscaled 720p, all others in SD as they were previously.

Something going on with TV2 or just a problem at my end?

Sure, everything bar TV2 which I can't resolve in the scan of the TVNZ mux.

Juts curious as to whether TV2 was down presently pending something ...

EDIT: problem fixed, finding TV2 now, also in upscaled 720p.

Not as overwhelming as true HD material, colours look a little washed out compared to DVB-S equivalent as well.

Ok, audio is working with that version of dvbviewer, but by working I mean making sound, not actually sounding _good_ - the status bar is showing 24kHz as well. Back on the sports extra its a 192 mpeg stream and sounds ok, but the rest are aac and low samplerate. Is it actually aac+?

Can someone do a short 1 min recording and upload it to stage6? screenshots dont tell too much, also would it be possible to do a native 720p program rather than an upscaled one?

Ah okay, i couldnt figure out from the posts if there were any actual 720p broadcasts yet, some were saying how great the quality was so i assumed 720p.
Sorry, never mind.

The quality is far superior to the SD channels. I was flicking between SD and Upscaled and the image was much sharper. The audio was also better.

Whats it reporting on the status bar for the audio when you are on C4 etc? (I cant do the HD channels on this PC)- I get 24kHz not 48 - it says its HE AAC which is another name for AAC+ so I think I am not getting the SBR part. No idea if there are any settings to change for that in the audio codec...
