Do this mean Freeview (or actually the stations) will be enforcing the ICT (?) flag and not letting people with HDTV sets with only component in get HD, only downscaled SD? Or am I reading this wrong?

They will probably be using the tag, but the transmissions are free and Mediaportal/MythTV/GBPVR ignores the ICT flag.
If you choose the STB method however this could be the case, however some STBs might ignore it also.

The problem is the copyright owners (read big US companies) require the broadcasters to use the ICT flag on HD transmissions. Also freeview STBs will only do HD over HDMI, but some 3rd party STBs might do HD over component.

Are you sure that's true? With the early takeup of HD TV's in the US many users over there will have TV's that only have component inputs. If the ICT flag were set on cable or satellite transmissions then those folks would only see down rezzed video. That would cause major legal issues over there. Note that while HD-DVD (RIP) and Bluray support the ICT flag, no content that I have read about actually enforces the flag for the same reason.

And of course over the the whole ICT flag doesn't count for OTA HD transmissions since just as here, you can't put up a UHF aerial and receive the OTA FTA channels on any TV that has a ATSC tuner or a ATSC tuner box or a PC with a ATSC tuner card (when you can then record the signal).

Maybe not but many were sold as HD capable (even though they are 1024x768 or whatever). And wasn't there a big fuss a year ago when HD was announced that many TV's advertised as HD capable in fact would not support HDCP.

I guess it's a wait and see scenario.

Yes i'm sure there will be quite a few unhappy punters with 844x480 Plasma sets who thought they could do HD.

Just to add to the thread I installed Media Portal last night to play now that it properly supports H.264 and AAC audio. I was very impressed by it, it's certainly a huge step forward compared to a year or so ago when I last played with it and found it a mess.

The ability to record (or stream to multiple PC's) multiple channel's on the same MUX with a single tuner card is a seriously cool feature to have

MediaPortal/TVServer stability has come a very long way. I suspect that TVServer will be released soon.

Does MediaPortal have support for MHEG5? Because this would be a big advantage over GBPVR (at the moment anyway). And I had heard that MediaPortal could record multiple channels from a single DVB-S mux with the one tuner. Can it do this with DVB-T as well? As you say this would be a great feature to have.

So the new Nvidia card is going well for you? I'm having a lot of issues with smearing on analogue MPEG2 stuff with my ATI HD2400 so I'm thinking about making the change myself.

Which SVN/versions are you using?

I played with MP about 5 months ago, and found the endless updates via SVN to be problematic - at the same time fixing and creating new bugs. GB PVR was just easier to configure out of the box. I guess if you can find a sweet-spot in terms of a build that works with your setup, then I can see the advantages to MP, but otherwise it can be time-consuming and frustrating.

The 8500GT is great. My only issue was with hardware acceleration using EVR and H.264 content which caused picture breakup and various other problems in interlaced content. On the 8500 everything works perfectly. Obviosuly the 8500 is a lower spec card than the ATI2600 for gaming but my main focus is H.264 acceleration so that's not an issue.

I was using the latest SVN's of both TV Server and Media Portal.

I can't vouch for the long term stabilty and did have one crash last night but only spent about 90 mins in total playing with it - around 30 to install and the other 60 trying to break it.

Calling all MediaPortal users

I installed MP tv server and client (snapshot 17872) onto my main PC (dual core 6300, 2GB ram, 7950GT, Hauppauge 3000).

It works well with DTT while watching programmes but fequently loses audio when I change channels (then I change up/down and back again and it works - usually). It also seem quite easy to break if I am not careful with it - like using the AV in planes.

How bulletproof do you find MP tv server/client with DTT and LATM ACC? I haven't tried the stand alone version - is that more stable?

Or am I just not tweaked properly?
