Cheers for that grolschie. Sommet seems to be a very different kind of broadcaster. Not too interested in pr or image or keeping websites up to date, strangely!

No problem. However, I have to disagree about the PR. While the website isn't great, Sommet Sports have been awesome with their communication with viewers on their Facebook page.

Jas777: Sommet,

It is not 'FREE' though. Someone has to pay for it, be it advertisers or the Sports body wearing the cost to get a foothold.
The issue with advertising is that people today try to avoid advertising by any means possible or they flick channels for the 1-4 minutes it is on then come back.
The other thing with advertising (and you can take this anyway you like) is that those who complain about no 'FREE TO AIR' sports are less likely to actually purchase the products of the advertisers.

Coupled with this is that using something like twitter or facebook to determine what the majority consensus is can be misleading.

The other issue which has been raised here is that those who currently are willing to pay for sports coverage and get that coverage in a certain way don't want to go back to older quality. They probably won't be too worried about the new sports coverage you have that isn't or hasn't been shown elsewhere but would be worried about sports you have got that were previously shown elsewhere.

Do you not get ad's the way you are watching sports currently?  Do you pay for the content?

Jas777: Sommet,

You said 'Viewers of sport like to watch the events live, therefore there will be less use of a PVR on this channel'

Are you sure? As a lot of your premium content apart from AFL isn't live in primetime hours. I don't know about others but if I record a EUROPA cup or League Cup game to watch I will fast forward thru all but the playing time thus a 2 hour broadcast is only between 90 and 100 minutes not 120 minutes.

Nielsen point out that only 7% of all viewing is via a PVR.  Live sport is recorded less as people like to watch it live.

This information is not from us.

sommet,

Adverts not that much. I tend to set the game to record then start watching the game slighlty after it has started so can remove halftime and then finish about the time the game does. I do this also so I can go back when I want to not when the coverage does and it allows for short breaks if needed. I will still watch some stuff 'LIVE'. If it was cricket I could be multi-tasking so will ignore adverts and half the time they don't go to breaks anyway.

With US sports will do it as they have more timeouts, innings breaks etc. In a Baseball game for example you can remove 40 minutes of a 3 hour game.

If it was something like the UCL and EPL which are on at times when I am asleep or at work then I will record and remove.

Yes I do pay and I am happy to as I remember before we had PAYTV. I choose to spend my money on watching sports, others choose to spend on other things.

I get that people want to have 'FREE TO AIR' sports but a lot of the competitions which they complain about not seeing would not exist if there wasn't PAYTV. The super 15, Tri nations. Fisher and Paykell netball, IPL cricket etc.

How many other broadcasters do you have on here?

Maybe they're too busy updating their websites!

Since you're here though, please explain the requirement for MHEG5 to receive Sommet.

The broadcast is currently a test transmission and the website as it states is a interim website, this means that we are building.  Surely the time to judge is when they are both finalised?

The reason for this business was due to four mates sitting in a pub four years ago talking about the demise of live free to air sports on TV and that is it  different in the rest of the world.  Rather than moan and complain about it we decided to do something about it.  Our aim was clear "Free Sports for Kiwis!"

How about we focus on the positives on what we are trying to do?

I'm really keen for some free to air sport. Keep up the good work. Focus on the launch! Forget the website...

I haven't been watching the Facebook page, so my bad.

For the average punter out there, like me, a free sports channel will be awesome. I've been following the newspapers on progress, but they always seem to report the wrong info. I'm sure that there have been at least 2 false launch dates... I'm not sure if I can believe it's only a week away.

I'm not really a sports fanatic but I have typed in 114 (when ads are on the other Freeview channels or there was nothing worth watching) and have enjoyed what I have seen on Sommet. Look forward to seeing it go live and wish you all the best of luck. Am thrilled to see some competition for Sky.

Comment: Liverpool UDI game as transmitted compares to be cruder than a 640x360p 800 kbps download. Captures available if you want them. Now if this Sommet transmission was truely broadcast quality then the transmission should be derived from 576 lines of information be the playout interlaced or not, so how could it be cruder than a sub 1 Mbps 360p rendition. Please explain and tell me about these encoders (capture cards in home PCs?? - analog input at that) and yes I'm a technical person.

P.S. And the colour is way off and I get why you have the non transparent logo.

Did you watch any of the AFL last night? If so, how did that compare?

No. The only AFL have seen was D1-CIF level. My guess would be that they just push 360p low bitrate internet streams into encoder and get 576i produced from 288 lines of info. Logo hides over the air TV station of origin (not sure if logo on AFL though).

Watching the MotoGP right now. Pictures are really soft. The sommet sports bug is sharp but all the graphics on the MotoGP are barely readable.

Compared to other SD channels, this is quite disappointing.

I agree, the vertical resolution seems very low compared to the horizontal resolution. It's not a bitrate issue, but a processing problem in my opinion.

I watched a bit of the MotoGP last night.

I have to say that although I am not really a motoGP fan, it was great to see some good sport (other than AFL) on the telly for free.

Bring on the football, I say.

I can live with "soft" pictures and "hard" logos if the content is going to be free and watchable.

THANKS SOMMET! Good on you for taking it to the market and getting some wins!
