bazzer:
kjcrawford: I might consider a tivo for $199 not $299 (As $299 is 133% of my budget).

I've also found JCMatthew DVR-320T for $210. Would that be worthwhile?

I have the JCMatthew and it's pretty decent. Not flawless, but mostly good. From what I've heard, I would consider buying a tivo if I didn't already have the JCMatthew.

Just checking, is your budget $225?

Close to there about.  Wink

I wanted to initially spend no more than $200 but I wouldn't reasonable bar anything close to that amount.

This is all pretty much for my wife anyhow so I think I might go with the Tivo unit if I can get it on special.  I personally only watch tv to be companionable.  I greatly prefer watching a movie on my Xbox or putting my brain through the paces with some intensive decision making and problem solving training on the computer (First person shooters, RPGs, and open world survival games.)

I greatly appreciate everyone’s’ advice and guidance in this area.  I’ve been greatly enriched by everyone’s’ opinions.

Off-topic

I wonder when/if I’ll get too old for these behaviours that I indulge in during my free time.  My free time has definitely dwindled with my 5 month old girl getting a good chunk of the time I used to use for my activities.  I wonder if their will be a time when I don’t indulge in them at all?  I’m definitely open if someone wants to share a bit of wisdom of experience if you’ve already gone through this.  After all I’m only 27 ;-D

Warning, hugely personal views to follow:  You chose to bring someone into the world, so I'm sorry but you've now got real world requirements and responsibilities that take precedence over virtual based pastimes.  And trust me, she won't be 5 months old for very long, so enjoy it now and be the parent she needs.....

Get the Tivo over the JC Matthews unit.  (From someone who has had both)

Thanks for the advice of Tivo vs JC Matthews equipment.  Definitely my choice as of now.

On a side note:

Lol

Again, thanks Jaxson.  I guess I asked for it...literally!

Kind of a big presumption to imply I'm not being the parent she needs though.  Of course my lovely daughter takes precedence over gaming.  Hence why she has won the majority of my free time from me.  I was more of asking for experienced fathers to comment about my future free time and whether to expect it to diminish to almost nil or not.

If you are an experienced father, fire away on the future diminishing free time I may or may not have Wink

Yeah, apologies if it was blunt and/or off the mark. I actually didn't presume you weren't being a good father, but I can see how my hastily written reply does convey that! You're doing fine if you even chose to ask. And congrats too, on the young one, well done.

Enjoy the 1 - 3 hours alone time you get after they have gone to bed, before you need to go to bed yourself. That's all I can add!

With one child you might be lucky to preserve some "me time" in the next handful of years. But have any more, and/or once school and all the sports, music, dance, friends, homework etc kicks in then those occasions will be relatively rare, at least if you want to retain your good father and husband status. Gaming will always be there, kids won't...so make the most of the time they have with you.

People over pixels every time.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Thanks Jaxson and Scuwp!

No worries Jaxson, I often try to err on the side of caution with replies I may get offended on.  The internet rarely conveys the intention of the author accurately.

I've been finding myself to mostly just wait until the time after she's down for the night for any "me time" and spend her waking hours together.  Especially since I work and commute by train leaving me with only about 2hrs - 3hrs before she's out for the night.

It's not a bad trade off anyhow as I feel great about spending time with my little one and always took the stance that computers, televisions, etc were just a waste of potentially productive time.

Gilco2: I believe Freeview certified terrestrial are not supposed to be able to record to usb [...]

Yes they can. The Freeview approval requirements (which I have obtained as a pdf that I have saved somewhere) allow this, provided they cripple the recording with DRM to stop it being transferred to another player or a PC etc.

+1 on the Tivo recommendations. If you can get one on sale for $199, it's extraordinary value for money.
