Hi all,

I've been trying to search this morning for a list of approved freeview recorders.

I found the list of approved equipment on the freeview site; but I was wondering if there was a list of the approved recorders somewhere.

I'd rather not have to look up each individually approved piece of equpiment to find out if it has recording capability through USB and whether it's single or dual if list already exists.

If you haven't figured out by now, my question is thus.

Is there a list of approved freeview recievers that shows their ability to record (usb, or internal hard drive) and whether they have single or dual tuners?

satellite or terrestrial?

There's actually not many approved recording units so your search may not take as long as you initially think?...

Terrestrial.  There seemed to be a number of freeview boxes that could record via usb that aren't listed on the freeview site as recorders.

Ah I see where you're coming from now.

If they aren't on the site, then they are not current model approved units. What that means is there is a good chance that they won't have the recording version of the MHEG5 EPG, so you won't get series link etc. That's not necessarily a bad thing, etc, but it's something to consider.

Off topic now but personally I'd only go for a twin tuner unit. TIVO is a good buy if you can find one on special.... It's not approved, but it has series link and is good value for the price.

I was wondering if the tivo was approved or not, becuase they do have the freeview logo on the website, and mine had a 'freeview flyer' in the box. I wouldn't have thought they could use that logo if it wasn't approved, as it sort of implies it is. I always thought it was an approved device, although the website at http://www.mytivo.co.nz/whatistivo/tivoisfreeview/compatible/ says it is 'compatible'. Does it really make any difference?

I believe Freeview certified terrestrial are not supposed to be able to record to usb.   For Terrestrial I would recommend TIVO and use buy the home network package.   I used to think nah TIVO not that useful then I bought one at $199 sale and havent looked back.  Even at $299 it really is an excellent buy.  I wouldnt want to be without it now.

Tivo is by far the best DVR you will find in the market these days...

+1, especially considering it's cheap price, and despite consumers rating of it.

yep very good value with the price.  I bought a second one on sale but havent unpacked it yet.  Seeing some people have had doa units, I think maybe I better get it out and test it first.
I am keeping the first one standard and then if anything goes wrong it will still be covered by warrenty and consumers act.   This second one I will remove the hard drive and fit a 1TB drive in it thereby invalidating the warranty

Who generally sells tivo equipment?  And who seems to have them put on sale for a special price? I would love to pick one up for $199 as that was about what I wanted to spend.

Which is better terrestrial or satellite?  The place I just moved into to rent has both but I'm worried about getting satellite and then in a years time if I move again find myself without a satellite.  But everyone seems to have terrestrial capability.

I'm a bit new to the whole freeview bit, so forgive my ignorance.  But would I just plug the aerial or satellite connection in the tivo box and have it autoscan and I'm done?  This would be best case scenario I know but I believe the lady before me had freeview.

Noel lemming or bond and bond, usual price $299, special price $199.

Tivo is not freeview approved simply due to the fact that recorded shows can easily be transfered off the device to another tivo or PC on the same network, other wise it is the hands down best freeview PVR on the NZ market.

even at the regular price of $299 it's a great deal

Noel Leemings or Bond & Bond for $299.  Or I did still see them in a Telecom store the other day still for $499 (?????)

"Most" places have terrestrial but not all, and yes you need a different decoder for each type.   Terrestrial will give you full hi def so is better in that regard.  I think most places (if not all) will get terrestrial coverage eventually.

The TiVo could honestly be set up by my 5 year old.  Pretty much plug it in and follow the instructions.  yes it scans all the channels and then you are away.  There are some preferences you can play around with if you want (very easy to understand and follow on screen menus) or you can just accept the defaults.  It does has CASPA (facility to download movies etc) but most people ignore it as the content is pretty bad and it's hardly cheap.

As mentioned, even for $200 the TiVo is by far the best you are going to get.    Remember however it must have an internet connection to download the program guide and updates etc.  So if no broadband then no TiVo.

If your in an area that has a regional digital broadcaster , i wouldn't touch the Tivo, There doesn't appear to be anyway of tuning in non freeview channels and even if you could, there would be no epg

I might consider a tivo for $199 not $299 (As $299 is 133% of my budget).

I've also found JCMatthew DVR-320T for $210. Would that be worthwhile?

I have the JCMatthew and it's pretty decent. Not flawless, but mostly good. From what I've heard, I would consider buying a tivo if I didn't already have the JCMatthew.

Just checking, is your budget $225?

It's not a current model, and honestly there is very close to zero support for it now...
