Well that was boring, straight to snow. No countdown timer or message on the screen, not even a goodnight kiwi.

DjShadow: I'm wondering more if any TV geeks will be recording analogue tonight and showing the switch off, then uploaded it to youtube. Plenty of these kind of vids on youtube from Aus, USA and UK.

I only found one picture from the Hawkes Bay DSO of a tech at TVworks transmitter shortly after switch off

Don't think there will be anything to show just infomercials then snow.  Wonder if TVNZ will do anything special as they did in the US when Auckland shuts down on Dec 01  as it all started at AKTV2 .

I will record it when the lower north island goes digital. I have managed to get the right equipment to hopefully to a split screen of digital and analogue.

I wish tvnz would have done a goodnight kiwi when this area was switched off. A bit rude of them really. Lets hope that the next two switchoffs will have a nice wish. (TVNZ is capable of regional broadcasting (through advertisments) so it shouldn't be too hard for them to do).

There are no plans for any particular "send off" as the analogue regions are switched off as far as I know. The idea is that everyone's watching digital by the time it disappears so no one would see it :). We can feed different content to different regions, but this happens before the signal is split into SD / HD / SKY / Analogue etc, so injecting content into TV1-WANA for instance would require a bit of work.

Well, just about all the main channels have been switched off. However, an Asian channel, Shine TV, and a community station from Rangiora (channel 39) are still going. Presumably they have to the end of the day to switch off.

Did no one tell that guy broadcasting from Rangiora...? Laughing

The Christchurch Ch39 Analogue transmission is the Amateur TV Channel.
On the RSM database it is licenced until 31 Dec 2013. As far as anyone knows there is no requirement to cease broadcasting on this channel before the licence expiry.

Shine TV has said that their signal should cease to function by the end of the day.

It looks like the Amateur TV channel 39 HAS gone off the air for now, but there is a black screen rather than snow.

That only leaves Arirang (channel 42 in Chch) which, when I last looked, was struggling with a pixelated signal, which might simply be a fault from their satellite feed or it is in the process of shutting down.

I'm a bit confused. Why is there a "shortage" of space available? I thought the whole point of digital is to have room for hundreds of channels. I'm not talking about satellite here but terrestrial. So far, only UHF 32 & 36 are being used, aren't they? That leaves potentially heaps more space for other channels.

I'm guessing Scrap Metal dealers will be rubbing their hands with all that old analogue transmission gear/antennas about to be pulled out of all South Island sites

Update: the remaining 3 channels have now disappeared. I guess the analogue switch off overrides any private contract. Perhaps Amateur TV is being compensated for the extra time they were supposed to have the frequency.

Yeah today was a bussssssssy day for electronic retail staff. We had so many calls about Freeview. None from people totally confused as to why they have no picture, they'd all heard of going digital, but most were people that thought they were sorted but actually weren't, or people who left it till now to sort out a second TV or such.

Not bad.. hopefully when the last region gets switched over later this year, we get a decent send-off on TV.

Maybe even see the 'switch get thrown'

hmmm, I could run a 4watt tv transmitter into a yagi and stick it on the tv1 freq after switchoff in auck, could play a bunch of movies to keep the old folk entertained on their ancient tv sets. just have to hope rsm dont come knocking :) only prob is the existing h pol will make things difficult and produce nulls.

I still dont get the need to clear up the VHF bands to put absolutly nothing in the place of the analog that is going.
