Would it be easier to just buy some new smaller tv's and hook into the aerial instead? Can you cascade splitters with that system?

It would be better picture quality wise for sure.

Yes you can split a UHF aerial just the same, but there will be a reduction in signal strength for each device and splitter you insert.

If you have shorts with your cabling then you'll get the same result with the freeview HD aerial approach.

Take some photos of your cable connectors/termination points. What type of connectors did you use?

If you want to go satellite, you'll need to confirm that every receiver box you have works on at least one connection. Start with the basics and work up from there.

cartoonis: I'll grab a few photos tonight, also I have used a couple of different set top boxes on each outlet.

If the STB works in the Lounge but not at any other of the outlets then there must be a fault in your wiring. Either a short or an open circuit.

Yes, definitely and you will be able to watch HD. I have UHF splitters in my antenna system same as your drawing and all works perfectly. Use good quality splitters in a cast metal box. I got mine from Bunnings.
Edit.  P.S. Get a splitter with one input and the number of outputs you need. Much better than cascading.

So they were'nt joking, no TV in the bedrooms this morning!! On a more positive note I was back uner the house switching out the splitter with the one I removed from the roof, no luck, made a second patch cable, no luck then Pullen the belling lee skirting wall plate doff, chucked a plug on the RG6 and connected that to the STB, bingo! Now all I have to do is find a thin skirting wall plate to tidy the job up! Thanks heaps guys!!!

computerstore.co.nz and jaycar have a range of faceplates and skirting mount boxes plus f to f adaptors/inserts which is what I used. f plugs are way better than Belling Lee.

So I'd just use http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/home-audio/home-theatre/auction-644393690.htm there isn't that much room behind so I'd need to also use a right angled adapter, is http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/tvs/cables-aerials/auction-642991382.htm the right type?  Then just a patch cable from the plate to the STB.

Those are inserts for PDL 600 series faceplates. Have a look on the PDL site - I think they have a 600 series architrave plate which would take those inserts.

Perfect, they're the plates I was thinking of - just swap out the insert for the "F" one.
