richms: Yes, but the free software may not work to show the H264 stuff used in NZ if it is really old, which lots of the cheap DX and ebay tuners come with.

If you are going the cheap tuner route, order an antenna adapter from the same people so it comes at the same time so you can plug it into a real antenna, the stubby things they come with are generally worse than useless.

I would be plugging it into my UHF antenna on my roof. Do you have to use the software provided with the tuner or is there better software? And if so what would you recommend?

Where did you get your $12 tuner and can you record 1080i?

Thanks for your help

Deal extreme and yeah it records 1080 fine. Playback was awful on my old amd graphics but the cheap nvidia handles it fine.

I use nextpvr if free and for windows. It and media portal (the other big free windows solution) have the advantage over mce that with one tuner you can record more that one Chanel at a one if on one frequency. Ie all tvnz 1, 2 tv1+1 And tv2+1 all at the same time.
