Hi,

I am unsure which TV tuner has worked for New Zealand. For record the programes to the hard drive, in 1080i quality. It needs to be a USB one. Any idea which good work?

Any DVB-T tuner sold in NZ should work without problems. The tuner doesn't do a lot to be honest. Most of the hard work is done in the software on the computer.

Are you saying you need a USB tuner? Is that because you are using a laptop?

Interests: HTPC, Web App authoring.

There are other tuners available.

PCIe ones for desktop style PCs and Network based ones. But for simple trying out software, a USB one is much cheaper.

No but I would Like to Go budget Good price, and the USB one always cheaper then PCIe

Yes to both...just requires a standard UHF aerial connection (the same used by a freeview HD capable TV).

Essentially all the tuner does is take what is transmitted and writes it to disk. It's the computer that has to do all the hard work to device the video and audio streams for playback.

Although currently only TV1,2,3 on Freeview are in 1080i HD, the rest are 576i SD

Yes and Yes.
Any digital tuner will record 1080i if the transmission is 1080i.

Also realise that the video card you have plays a big part in the de-interlacing of 1080i. If you have an older PC you could run into issues. As mentioned above. Recoding is a pretty light task even for an old PC, its just saving a data stream to disk. Playback is the heavier part.

What is a good software to record the Tv with? I don't want one which is like a full blown media centre software, just one to recording Tv show and View the EPG?

So just to clarafiy I can buy any cheap DVB-T USB tuner and as long as Pc fast is enough, I can record full quality 1080i Tv One, two and 3 correct?

Yes, but the free software may not work to show the H264 stuff used in NZ if it is really old, which lots of the cheap DX and ebay tuners come with.

If you are going the cheap tuner route, order an antenna adapter from the same people so it comes at the same time so you can plug it into a real antenna, the stubby things they come with are generally worse than useless.
