pyronical: Ah ok, sorry the SEK-3500U will only work with the F9000. The F8000 cannot be upgraded to tizen / freeview plus.

It appears that you are correct from looking on other websites from searching the SEK-3500U. I just don't know why that I have an evolution box on my model and it is not upgradeable although it was sold under those pretenses. I wonder if there some kind of legal action I can take. I feel ripped off by Noel Leemings.

Give it a shot. They promoted those kits as a way to get more life out of your TV and you are now finding that not to be the case. Prime example of where the CGA should be put to use.

There is an SEK-2000 that will upgrade the F8000 to the 2014 OS. But there is no evolution kit for the F8000 to be upgraded to tizen/freeview plus.

What you are looking for is HBB TV support just google the u.k models if the same set there supports it. Then its probably just a service menu tweak away from being turned on.

You don't need tizen to get HBBTV

They are the same thing, only 2015 Smart Samsung (aka Tizen) TVs are capable of HbbTV.

TIZEN is just the O.S the HBB TV function has been supported in high end samsungs for years. My 2012 model ES8000 list it in the specs. Functionality is generally enabled by adjustment in the service menus.

They actually enabled it overseas via use of a downloadable app in the Samsung appstore, which tweaks the internal service menu settings to enable the DATA function.

you could try the forum here, someone may know how to enable it on your set.

Firstly, yes I realise the difference between HbbTV and the OS.
Secondly, TVs purchased locally are not identical to Europe/US models etc.  Europe has been using HbbTV for years hence their TVs had it built in long ago.  NZ models are manufactured specifically for our location, no Samsung TV pre-Tizen bought in NZ supports HbbTV.
Thirdly, Freeview uses a whitelist.  Samsung (and all other manufacturers) provide a certified list of TVs to connect to Freeview Plus of which only Tizen enabled systems were included for Samsung.

So if by some miracle you have managed to get your non-Tizen TV to connect to Freeview Plus, then it was not bought in NZ and for some reason is getting past the whitelist.

I decided to give Noel Leeming a visit. Long story short, I am expecting delivery of a new JS8000 tomorrow. Freeview plus enabled and 4K resolution. I don't feel so ripped off at the moment.

I may be wrong about all this, but:

- I thought the 2012 8000 was an LED - we have one. Was there a plasma model too?

- Looked into evolution kits myself - extremely expensive - about $500 and don't actually give you a hell of a lot new/extra.

- I believe the last kits for 2012 tv's were released in 2014?

I asked a couple of Samsung service guys (who came to replace our tv's screen recently) about evolution kits and they sort of laughed and said don't waste your money.

My apologies - I was wrong - checked further and the E8000 certainly is a plasma - our LED is ES8000.

What did Noel Leeming have to say ? I remember when I brought that the upgrade options was a feature samsung were advertising as the next big thing and then they seemed to stop offering a few years ago and not follow through on the 4 year upgrade availability promise.

NL didn't really do much, but facilitate the initial conversations with the manufacturer. If you believe they mislead you, go have a conversation and let them know how you feel and ask them how they plan on coming to a solution.
