Maybe you've hit on the reason why reality tv is popular - everyone watching it is drunk.

The new channel will be a joint venture with NBC. Coming soon - Real Housewives of Auckland. I'm not making this up...

I think by now everyone in NZ must know someone who has been on a reality show. Friends of ours were one of the Dreamhome teams about 10 years back, and I appeared on screen for about 5 seconds during one of the working weekends. Once you see a bit behind the scenes of one reality show, you tend to look at all of them differently. Dreamhome is pitched as a competition, but its pretty much rigged to make sure the result that will rate best wins. Our friends were the 'losing' team in the end, but the producers still chipped in for about half their mortgage, so they came out of the experience very happy.

These days, about the only reality shows I watch are Face Off, because those makeup effects are awesome, and if I bump into them channel grazing, the storage locker auction shows, cos they're just weirdly fascinating.

Yeah, I saw my former hairdresser pop up on Kiwi Living the other night.

I have to admit I'll watch the storage locker shows, although my sister insists they're all completely staged. And I do have a soft spot for Location, Location, Location. I'll chalk that one up as my guilty pleasure :o) Not all reality TV is awful. I've really enjoyed things like Top Gear, Time Team, The Long Way Down ... they're all British shows come to think of it.

In my eyes, there are probably three levels of reality programming: good educational documentary shows, then the lifestyle ones like cooking and renovating which still have some sort of substance, and then there's the stuff like Bravo is planning to broadcast which, well... I've just gone to their US website and the main tile has a picture of a dude wearing a big gold medallion, and is captioned "Roller Disco Drama! Shep Rose isn't pleased to learn Kathryn Calhoun Dennis has been left off his birthday party invite". Enough said.

I'm not a fan of the reality format where people compete against each other for something, be it by singing, dancing, cooking, baking, renovating, dating, whatever... I've watched a few eipsodes of things here and there but basically avoid them altogether now. I do like some of the shows where we see real people doing their jobs, often under difficult circumstances, and the occasional nut job they run into - I'm thinking Border Patrol, Dog Squad, some of the local and Australian cop shows... I'm not sure if they count as reality TV. If so I guess I'm on the fence, but right now I'm thinking FOUR will probably be another channel on Sky to skip over completely.

I can't stand any of the reality crap. But I don't have a problem with it being made available for those who do enjoy it. My objection is to the lack of choice for those who want not just something else, but something better. I simply do not watch NZ television any longer. The something better is all overseas now.

It's fine us all trashing clickbait TV but you've only got to look at the TV ratings to realise it's exactly what a lot of people clearly want to watch.

Possibly many of those people who are still watching FTA TV, who are possibly those people who aren't that onto it with technology. So it is now mainly catering to a lower IQ.

I used to watch TV3 / 4 quite a bit in the past, but don't even bother these days. They have become a medium for shock jocks. TVNZ isn't much better, as everything has become so dumbed down. But that seems to be occurring in NZ as a whole at the moment.

Much spend is now going online, as haven't TV advertising spends down? But from what I seem it is the younger, tween/teen, and lower socio economic groups that seem to watch it. You can probably tell by the amount of fast food advertising on TV.

You still have a large proportioner of older people watching TV one, which is where the luxury products are being sold to. Some of these are the people who feel rich because they own one or more Auckland houses. Many are doing very well, with NZ super topped up by their savings, and free local travel etc. This age group also tends to have sky, and haven't got onto the whole streaming thing yet.

I like those shows, but they aren't really the same as the NZ type shows that are produced, such as a house makeover shows, which are really just big advertorials. Location doesn't have product placement, nor are they selling anything to you.
