Assuming you are not in the minority of not having one on the property already, then yes, but you would keep you UHF to feed into the TV for watching HD stuff live

-buy the box from TM at approx $130 is this something like this - "Satellite Freeview Receiver with PVR Function"
-but a external USB HDD

my things is I've just bought a UHF aerial and had it installed and the Sony TV only has the Freeview HD - so if i really wanted to record these 2 things would become superfluous - : (

Yes, well thats the problem with inbuit tuners, they never said it would allow you to record it. They are not superfluous since you still need a tuner to watch tv live when you are recording something else, the $130 boxes are just a single tuner device so cant watch one thing and record another like mysky does.

oh hi Cyril - have read a few postings from u with regards to freeview and u seem quite knowledgable on it but what is the $100k+ encoder u mean or was it suppose to be $100+ (with the k??)

so if i actually wanted to record off my inbuilt freeview HD decoder using the DVB-T system - I'm ***ked - does that pretty much sums it up?

He was referring to the fact that the tv companies spend a crapload on their encoders to send down a good signal thats got minimal or no artifacts (well, except for sky who seem to pride themselves on overcompression)

If you find an analog out from the TV, and plug that into a hdd or dvd recorder, you will be using an mpeg encoder that in a word, sucks. Also, when a HD box that records to HDD comes out, the files will not be easily usable to burn to DVD, whereas the mpeg2 of the sat is relativly easy to make a dvd from, again, no reencoding so your not worried about loss of quality from the reencode process.

Perhaps when bluray burners are common, the discs are not stupid prices and the software had matured it will be as easy to dump stuff off dvb-t to disc, but till then for putting on dvd, IMO taking it off sat is the best option.

So yeah, your ***ked if you want an easy job recording something presentable out of your bravia.

ahhhhhhhhhh looks like it doesn't pay to be an early adopter......... ! - should have learned from the past : (

i think after reading all your advice that the best option for me at this stage is to wait ( seeing i don't have the Satellite) and wait for someone to come up with a HD recording box - once more homes take up on the HD i'm sure well i hope there'll be someone that comes out with an appropriate box

thks for all the advice as it has given me a better idea of what is out there

Get a PS3, wait until PlayTV ( a sony product google it) comes out, about jan/feb. I hope it will come out and work as they have said.

1 you have blu ray player!

2 you have HD PVR

3 You have a gaming machine

4 you can send your music/photos to it via home network either streaming or to the HDD (media centre)

This is what i'm counting on!

until then sd tv for me

Get MySky HDi, all free to air channels will be on Sky soon anyway in HD like TV3 is now. Then you have the PVR built in to record in SD the free to air channels in the mean time and be able to record TV3, 2 Sky movie channels and two Sky sport channels in HD now. Olympics over shortly ( thank God ) and then it's back to the old rubbish Coronation St etc anyway on TV1 and 2.

Unless you have some inside knowledge this is nothing more than wishful thinking. TVNZ and Sky are still very much at odds with each other.

From what I have heard, it will happen. Just when, we don't know, it will only benifit TVNZ so they will join. They are on Sky now in SD, so won't be that long, not wishful thinking on my part, don't watch those channels anyway - won't affect me either way.

It will have very little benefit to TVNZ considering the money the GOV put into getting them on Freeview HD platform. The only benefit having TVNZ 1 & 2 on Sky is to Sky so that they can justify the $120 / month for a HDi box..

well this is my way of thinking pretty soon there'll be more homes with the TV that have built in HD and one day pretty much all TV's will have that HD box thingy built in so here's hoping there'll be something on the market that will allow us to record .... i hope....

Of course there will be, it's only a matter of time. It won't plug into your TV though, the same as your VCR doesn't use your TV tuner to record. It will have its own tuner built in to it. The benefit of your TV is you will be able to record on one of these new boxes, but also you'll be able to watch another channel on your TV at the same time.

wow suddenly it all makes sense! u r soo right i never actually thought about it like that before - that VCR's have their own tuner - and I was kicking myself for buying a TV with a built in HD but now I feel sooooo much better - thks!
