Good upscaling I guess. When TV3 shows a HD show they usually precede it with some ad like "This HD broadcast sponsored by bla bla" and then for the first few seconds show HD Surround 5.1 on the screen. TV1/TV2 OTOH actually have a HD logo always showing during the programme.

KiwiME: I'm a little mystified by this thread - is House not in HD now?  The picture on last week's show was simply stunning on my 46" set.

Raises a really good point here.  I showed someone the HD demo channel at the weekend and it was one of the TV show segments.  Honestly didn't look that impressive.  Then checked back 5 min later and it was the water/island nature demo and it was a 'wow' moment.  So really I think the actual content determines how significant the perceived difference is.

A lot of these shows are not that much better in HD and house might be one of them as it's mostly inside shots on a set.  CSI miami and Prison break have a lot of outside shots and they really seem to benefit from the increased resolution and 5.1 sound.

Totally agree, once it moves on to the NZ promo video the quality improves a lot.

I've only had my 46" for a week now, and I previously watched Freeview on 17" LCD computer screen.  I'm surprised at the variations in quality I'm seeing, most shows are very good even where HD is not listed in the EPG.  As I said, "House" looks great for not being in HD and I tend to sit close to my screen.

Coro St. ---- Looks great, HD or not?

Survivor ---- Looks great, HD I assume.

McLeod's Daughters --- supposedly in HD but doesn't look it.  (Not that I care!)

Home and Away --- looks great, HD or not?

LOST re-runs --- looks good, supposedly in HD.

CSI Miami ---- excellent, in HD.

TV1 and 3 news studio shots ---- terrible, don't they have HD gear yet?  Even the on-site news reports sometimes look better.

Requires more than just HD cameras in a production suite to go HD. The major US networks took a long time before they went HD in their news - not exactly cost effective and what is the benefit to the audience?  Most of the ENG is still SD and since much of the content in news in ENG stuff, you have video that alternates between HD in the studio and SD in the field.

I could care less about live programming (apart from sports) in HD - much prefere shows to be in HD with 5.1 audio. As an aside I thought the Olympics were stunning in HD, especially the swimming.
