Getting OT, but it is no longer Freeview if it's over IP as there is the ongoing cost of the internet connection.

They could spend what is spent on the satellite and terrestrial network instead subsidizing ONT installs and getting chorus/LFCs to spin up some bare bones IPTV only plan like they have voice only plans for holdouts on that.

My personal view is that we should phase out OTA TV boardcasts and make it purely IPTV. Especially in NZ where there is universal good broadband to the majority of the population. Then utilise the satellite technology to provide good broadband to those who live in areas with poor broadband connectivity. I use Freeview over IP exclusively and never bothered to get my antenna fixed when I moved into my current house.

You would be surprized how many little old ladies who rely on OTA TV for their daily watching  and don't have internet..  Having to have two STBs would be a step too far for them unless they bought a TV with IPTV  built in.

They could do it like Vodafone use to do ,

multicast over a UDP address

previous examples

udp://@233.18.160.1:5501 Vodafone demo promo
udp://@233.18.160.71:5571 Duke
udp://@233.18.160.28:5528 Hope channel [9028]

These little old ladies also used to rely on copper lines for their telephones and those were somehow repalced with fibre and VOIP. So TV is not that far of a stretch.

How did they switch PSTN over to VOIP? They created a little magic box that old phones could be plugged into. Similarly, government (through Kordia/Chorus) can deploy an IPTV box with a Ethernet input and a HDMI output. These already retail for less than $100 and all these little old ladies need to do is to connect two cables. I mean some ISPs like Vodafone is practically doing this.

Boy there is some ageism on the thread I am over seventy and have subscriptions to Disneyplus, Neon, Amazon Video and in my little spare time am learning NodeJS and spinning up Docker containers.

Don't assume we all want to watch Andre Rieu on large screens in the rest home.
