We are saturated with advertising everywhere we turn. I am sick to death of advertising. I will do whatever I can to avoid it. Thank god there is still an off switch.

So we're back to the 60s when radio and TV was one organization called the NZBC. Is the Minister of Broadcasting even aware of our broadcasting history? Has he done research into why it was split in the first place? Why does he act like he's doing something new?

Listening to RNZ this morning and an interview with 2 'experts' they did raise the concern that there should be another level of Governance as the board is effectively politically selected.

I can see if they become the behemoth it appears it will become it's going to create a vacuum which stands a reasonable chance of sewing the seeds of distrust in the state broadcaster.

I expect to see a fair amount of 'unintended consequences' in all of this.

Ironic too considering their main copetition, Meidaworks, has sold off its TV business and just kept radio. So they have gone from being under one umbrella to a split.

Taking into account the Freeview channel changes on Monday, I'm guessing any NEW TV channel will take #7 (currently.. and still TVNZ 2 +1 after Monday), and TVNZ 2 + 1 would move to 12 at that time.

What will they call the new entity I wonder?

I agree with the previous post that said a Maori name is more likely, but I can't entirely rule out them re-tooling that logo.

It's no longer happening. Hipkins has dropped it $16M later which begs the question - who are these arrogant self-important narcisists who think they deserve $6000-$9000 per week to be consulted on anything? What a waste of tax payers money.

Who's to blame? Those who charge it, or those who pay it?

This morning RNZ was talking about it, but talking $20+M but that GR said it wasn't all wasted because another attempt could make use of some of the 'learnings'. Given the miserable failure and opposition to it, why would any future investigation want to use any of that stuff?

Basically, they put (another) $20M in the middle of the floor and set it on fire.

The Orville S3 is on TVNZ On Demand, all conceivable future broadcasting needs can be met by just adding the first two seasons.

It should have been very obvious from the beginning that this wasn't going to work. They thought they were merging a TV broadcaster with a radio broadcaster but, in reality, they were trying to smash together a public service broadcaster with a commercial broadcaster.

Frankly, TVNZ should have been privatised back in the 90s when the commercial arm of Radio NZ was spun off and sold. If that had happened then Radio NZ would be in a good position to act as a comprehensive cross-platform public broadcaster.

This government seems to have a poor understanding of the media sector which is concerning given the growing commercial pressures and the media's role in upholding democracy.

On RNZ they mentioned it was the 3rd (4th?) failed attempt by Labour to make changes to RNZ and the way it operates in various ways.

I mainly consume news on FTA. I really hate our dumbed down infotainment current events crap. I miss Close Up and Campbell Live. I especially miss TV 7, which could have actually turned into a worthy ABC-like quality channel if F-ing National hadn’t killed it to save a measly five million dollars.

I wasn’t keen on the changes being proposed by Labour. It seemed chaotic and confused to me. The last thing I wanted was to see RNZ get sucked into the commercial TVNZ blob. I am glad the whole thing has been abandoned, but I still miss TV 7. I don’t know why they can’t just do something like that again. Something needs to happen, but the current situation is better than the direction they were going in. I just hope RNZ uses some of that extra funding to improve the quality of their  journalism and editorial services.

I think the ideal solution now would something like TVNZ 7 coming back.

Whether that's turning TVNZ 1 into a commercial-free public service channel or starting TVNZ7 again, I dunno.

There's also the huge archive of TVNZ/NZBC that could be used too (maybe revive TVNZ Heartland as an SD channel?)

Thing is, if PART of TVNZ is made commercial free, with a public broadcasting purpose then at some future time it might be easier to combine it with RNZ - if that's still desirable.

I think changing TVNZ's mindset FIRST was the missing step here.

I have an idea of turning National Radio into radio with pictures on channel 50. In case you didn't know, Checkpoint is turned into TV from 5-6:30pm Mondays to Fridays. It's a great way to watch the news without ads BTW. What if they took that concept and extended it to other programs?
