Spyware, that makes more sense. Why would the tech come up with the "too strong signal" idea? My field of expertise is maintaining Airbuses so I'm not unfamiliar with electronics, which is why that idea raised a few red flags.

Oblivian, will try with a rescan. Only moved 50kms down the road and was using Sugarloaf before the move but will try again.

i wonder if tech was reading meter wrong. maybe reading noise instead of signal. get pics of the amp and wiring if you can.

Hi Tweake. Always a possibility but I don't know the guy enough to be able to make that call. Amp is post mounted on the roof but will go up for a look-see when the winds die down. 🤔

A masthead amp would have a power supply somewhere, connected to power at wall by TV maybe.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

very very very common to have the power supplies go missing. typically people or the moving company take them thinking its the amp. amp won't run without it which results in no signal.

get a pic of what it is, might have to open it. then you can get the right power supply for it.

From what I can see from ground level, the masthead amp no longer has any cables connected and there is no trace of a power supply either near to the aerial sockets or in the roof space. I believe it may have been removed by the previous owner. The AV tech removed the legacy VHF antenna and associated cables as part of his tidy up. Before I replace any kit, I'm going to confirm by substitution that my TV is not the cause of the problem. If it's ok then I'll go for a fresh install of the antenna and cable.

Sugarloaf is about 80km from you. Signal too strong isn't what I'd expect. First thought would be there is a signal amp that isn't switched on or the plug pack got taken by previous occupier.

Edit where did that time go, started checking distance and got distracted 😀

If you do need attenuators, I have bought from these guys on trademe and its a much more realistic price than I have seen elsewhere. https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/electronics-photography/tvs/cables-aerials/listing/4500279140

Thanks Richard, I'll give them a try, can't complain at those prices. 😬
