tsamb: Does this tuner support MHEG-5 and will it have an 8 day EPG over the DVB-T signal?

No MHEG5 support.

mike872c: I can assure you, 4GB file size gets damn confusing when you're PVRing a number of shows over the period of a week. I use an Avermedia TV tuner card, which also limits file size to 4GB and it appends sequence numbers to the original title, all in the same capture directory. I've noticed this with a lot of Korean stuff now - lots of promise, but lacking in 'current' file technology, if you can describe NTFS for instance as current. Files can get huge (>12GB) when recording 1080i TV3 programs, even with MP4. The product also appears to have only one tuner (please correct me if I'm wrong here). I believe two tuners are an absolute minimum.

The Vantage HD6000T/NZ is designed to record to an external USB HDD and play back the recorded programs seamlessly. Multiple files is not an issue and are not shown in the playlist. How the data is stored on the HDD is irrelevant. One a single tuner, this product can record two channels simultaneously on the same mux without problems, and play back a recorded program.

MHEG-5 & 8-day EPG development is under negotiation with the manufacturer. Issue is that it is going to cost quite a bit and whether we can recover the costs.

Should you go ahead with developing and implementing the full EPG (which I assume will be able to be used for recording), will already manufactured units be able to have this feature added by firmware, or will it only be new units?

The current lack of a full EPG is the only thing stopping me purchasing one - and I'm sure I'm not the only person (especially considering the lack of quality competition).

Hi, if we do develop, we will make sure all existing units are software upgradeable.

Was thinking of holding off until a more affordable fully functional PVR with inbuilt HDD becomes available, but it seems this may still be some time off. Then it ocurred to me that since I already have a Homecast DVB-T unit that the single tuner on the Vantage is not such an issue (can use it basically for recording purposes only).

One question - how esy is it to record - can you just select the program from the epg or is it timer recording only, like a VCR. What exactly are you missing without an 8 day epg? does it mean you can only set recording up to 24 hrs ahead?

Another question that is unclear to me reading the DTV forum. Can you actually play content recorded on this device on a PC or media player. Seems like you can't but somebody says they have managed to do it. That would be the deal breaker for me if it couldn't.

The situation isn't exactly clear. Sub of gbpvr fame notes they can't be played in gbpvr even after processing.

Somebody else says they can be played after processing using Windows Media player.

I like the fact that gbpvr records the HD streams natively and they can be played with pretty much any program, including the Popcorn Hour

Hi,

The file format is proprietary so cannot be played via third party players. During our tests, we confirmed that DVBViewr 4.0 with PowerDVD codecs will play back the files. So, it is difficult but not impossible to play the files. There is some pressure on manufacturers to restrict the portablity of HD content by content owners. This is probably the reason why content is not readily playable.

The user manual is available online: Vantage HD6000T/NZ User Manual but it's not very helpful on the subject of setting-up recordings.

According to the manual you can press the record button to record whatever is currently being broadcast, or "schedule recordings from the EPG". Without the full 8 Day EPG, just having access to Now / Next information doesn't give much scope for scheduling recordings. There's nothing in the manual to suggest how, or if, you could schedule a recording for a programme to be broadcast a few hours or a few days in the future.

Edit: I see that in the DTVS Forum it was stated that Manual scheduling is possible. There are 40 timer events on it. It's just that the manual doesn't give any clue about how to manually schedule recordings.

Does this freeview HD receiver downscale signal to output on a standard definition TV, while still recording in high definition (to be played on a HD TV later)? Thanks.

Hi,

There is a new manual being written. Version 3 should have the extra information including the enhancements. As we are still developing and enhancing the software, the manual does gets out of date. We will continue to revise the manual to make sure it is current.

Yes, just use the Composite output or S-Video output. They are always standard definition.
