It looks like TV3 lowered their bitrate when they started TV3+1 around the 30th march

They seem to have it locked down to about 4 Mbps which isn't too bad.

I have also noticed it on my CRT TV. I get bursts or pixelation. I have sent a message to TVNZ thanks for the links with all the info very interesting. I was wondering why I got three extra tv one channels which must be the regional feeds they are testing.

No worries, re the links. Disclaimer: I don't know how accurate they are.

I too have been getting a small amount of pixelation just recently - not sure what causing that though.

Watching Lost and Chuck last night on TV2, the PQ at my end was pretty bad at times - in my opinion. Very compressed looking.

As an aside, anyone notice the difference in audio on TV2 between the two transponders?

Whats the point of having regional specific versions of TVNZ on freeview if the picture is going to be Crap!!! (I know the regional versions are so the can feed different ad breaks, it just sucks that they care more about adversters than viewers)

Think that is called paying the bills.. Much as I hate what they are doing I can see why. I just hope they can do something so that we have good bitrates and they can still have their regional advertising. Maybe you could just do the regional feeds during the ads? Sorry have no idea what is involved so guessing that is not possible. Would be nice though.

In the days before Freeview, we had the cheapest possible deal from Sky; I think it was called 'Decoder Rental', lower than the 'Basic package'. It received only the fta stuff - TVNZ etc. We ditched even that when Freeview appeared. Are these fta channels actually unencrypted, and therefore available without a Sky card? Maybe these haven't been hobbled like the Freeview ones? Anyone know? I don't want to buy another LNB unnecessarily. It's not an attractive way to go, as I currently have 2 cards in my MediaPortal HTPC, 1 for each Freeview transponder, so there is no clash whatever combination of channels is requested.

Yes I've often wondered about that, I think TVNZ are going about this in all the wrong way, and now with this tivo thing coming up (and the whole mediaworks stuff up) who wants to buy a zinwell for $800+?

Back on topic I'm off to complain about the picture quality.

If you take a look at http://www.lyngsat.com/optusd1.html you can see the freeview and sky FTA channels. At the moment Sky have an FTA transmission of TV One and TV 2 in SD where the video is at a lower bitrate than the freeview equivalents. Sky have no other FTA TV services on their transponders

We have to hope that TVNZ are planning on moving their regional feeds of TV1 elsewhere. The quality on TV2 for the Go Girls the other night was a serious drop, and the recording of freeview DTH was only 1.9G compared with previous recording at 2.4G, thats a 20% drop in bitrate.

(Update on previous post: Sky TV1 & 2 are horizontally polarised, so I can pick them up on same H LNB at 12671)

Last time I looked the Sky bit rate was around 3MBit average, and TVNZ are now around 4MBit average.

Actually since 03/04/2009 TVNZ's freeview bitrates have plummented.
The average for TV2 is only 2.85Mbps from the 03/04 to the 09/04
It's even been as low as 1.17Mbps!!!!!

Yes there has been a bitrate reduction on TV3 as well of about 20%
