So further to my comments above.  I just looked at my Panasonic telly.  And plugged a usb stick and it said I could use it for recording.

before formatting it there was a big warning saying it’s only accessible on tv. This tv.  And if the tv goes in for repair it may not be accessible when it comes back.  I assume that means it encodes with serial number or something like that.  It explicitly mentioned it’s not readable on a pc.

The Panasonic branded TVs with Google TV sold in NZ are not Panasonics but rebadged, likely TCLs. The Panasonic branded TVs with Amazon Fire TV are the real Panasonics.

" Instead of the Play Store, it came with Amazon's equivalent. For some reason, it doesn't have apps for SkyOpen, Maori and Shine."

There is no good reason why those app providers haven't put them on the Amazon app store. It may be possible for someone to sideload the GoogleTV apps onto a FireTV. I think the SkyGO app is only for phones/tablets and not TVs.

The path to least resistance is probably to install the apps on a phone/tablet and mirror the screen onto the TV.
