As for Mediaworks, they use 1080i and currently transmit TV3 @ 10 Mbps. As you see, at most they could upgrade one or other of C4/TV3+1 to 1080i and that would be it. Given they will be expected to add another channel in the future things will get tighter. I suspect TV3 will remain their only HD channel.

3 x 8 Mbps probably doesn't cut it either as once audio and EPG is added you will find that you are over the limit. Kordia mux has space for 2 x SD channels only, if Prime (image quality is up to Sky's usual disgustingly low level) were HD then it alone would have used all capacity on the Kordia mux.

Maybe NZ should have waited and gone DVB-T2 for the extra 6 Mbps. I suspose Kordia could have had a T2 network up about now, maybe the first in the world. I pick that any additional muxes will be T2 with the current decoders rendered useless.

This would be very illogical and an absolute disaster.

There is no need for DVB-T2, unlike the UK we have plenty of spectrum available for additional MUX's

We will have to remember - we heard it here first.

Mediaworks have channel 9 reserved with Freeview so that suggests Mediaworks is going to add another channel to freeview in the future therefore only one of Mediaworks four can be HD.

I think it will be a contractual thing as to when we will get more HD and 5.1 content. Most of the new stuff coming from overseas will be produced in HD and 5.1, but weather the networks are willing to pay extra to get these shows in HD is a different story. Either way, I think we'll only see changes between seasons where new contracts are signed.

I know most of the rugby sky does is HD and 5.1, so its a shame that the delayed replys on prime aren't 5.1. But we all know sky wants us to buy MYSKY so they'll keep feeding us the crap quality stuff on the replays!

A couple of possibly relevant points. I asked Mediaworks earlier this year why 24 was on C4 and not TV3. This is part of the response I got

"Yes 24 is going to be on C4 as it just doesn't get the numbers to justify a spot in peak on 3.  The decision was made to put it on in peak on C4 so it was at a more convenient viewing time than buried late at night on 3.  Currently there are no immediate plans to turn C4 into a HD channel, I dare say it will happen in time but at present there is so little potential HD content on C4 that the cost doesn't justify it."

This last season of 24 was one of the best for a while so I hope the next will be in HD.

And then about TV3 purchasing HD programming

"It is our policy to bring in an HD version of any programme we plan to show in prime time."

This is from Director of Technology at Mediaworks.

And it seems if they show programmes in 16:9 but not in HD it's because they have stockpiled content before that policy was in place. This would apply to Criminal Intent, SVU and House last season.

And why TVNZ doesn't do 5.1

"TVNZ's domestic production facility still uses tape. While surround sound is available from tape it cannot be fed into the distribution system. A project is underway to upgrade TVNZ's broadcast infrastructure and I understand this will resolve the difficulties  in using 5.1 audio. The scheduled completion date for this project is June 2010"

This is from the Minister of Broadcasting written 8 April 2009.

Given the economic situation declining ad revenue etc. I think that date is likely to slip.

TV3 have had issues with NBC charging more for HD content, Heroes last season switched from HD to SD towards the last few episodes.

Glad they have a HD policy now.

I suspect that we won't see C4 go HD any time soon as Mediaworks owners Ironbridge in Ozz are bleeding red ink everywhere. A breakup and sale of assets is more likely..

The reason Rove isn't in HD any more, is that Ten HD is no longer in existence, instead being repalced by OneHD, which doesn't show general TV, only sport.

So in theory Rove could still be broadcast here in HD if TV3 wanted to buy it. I would expect it to still be recorded in HD as most programs are these days. Just a theory though.

no.  Channel Ten in Australia are the orginiating broadcaster from Rove.  Up until earlier this year, they had an HD channel (due to their messed up system, Australia have SD and HD versions for each channel).  But this channel has been converted to OneHD.  Therefore Rove is no longer filmed in HD.
