Hi there. Is there a webpage, wiki or thread anywhere containing an up-to-date list of HD and/or Dolby Digital 5.1 programmes on Freeview|HD? Thanks in advance.

Well since TV3 is the only network that broadcasts 5.1 and they usually say on their guide if a show is HD (and then it's likely to be 5.1) that's the place to look.

TVNZ does have some HD programming, but precious little and it's not 5.1

check out this old thread

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=83&TopicId=25625

plus the freeview website has a very limited list of HD content.

As for 5.1....well only TV3 seem to be doing 5.1 but sometimes it is what they call Stereo HD so only 2 channels.

Thanks. Maybe there could be need for a wiki or a sticky thread that is kept up-to-date?

So far I have seen these listings on the TV3 website's schedule (19-25 September 2009):

* The Wiggles Show. HD (Sat 06:30)
* Survivor: Gabon. HD (Sat 15:00)
* ITM Fishing Show. HD (Sat 17:00)
* Gone Fishin'. HD (Fri 00:00, Sat 17:30)
* Back to you. HD|5.1 (Sun 17:00)
* NCIS. HD|5.1 (Sun 20:30)
* CSI Miami. HD|5.1 (Sun 9:30, Wed 23:15)
* Journeyman. 5.1 (Mon 23:30)
* CSI New York. HD|5.1 (Tue 20:30)

Then there's these pages:
http://tvnz.co.nz/content/2099215
http://www.freeviewnz.tv/whats_on_freeview/hd_programs

I don't have MHEG5 support in my STB so I don't think I can see what is coming up in HD and/or 5.1 in the EPG.

The list

Dirty Sexy Money
Ugly Betty
CSI
CSI: Miami
CSI: New York
Jaquie Brown Diaries
Rove
Criminal Minds
City Homocide
Private Practice
Stargate ?
Paradise Cafe
NCIS
Desparate Housewives
The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Lost
Hotel Babylon
McLeod?s Daughters
Back to you
Women's Murder Club
Medium
The Librarians
Outragous Fortune
SVU: Special Victims Unit
The Simpsons (new series)
Fringe
The Cult
The Mentalist
Survivor: Gabon
Gone Fishin' (according to tv3 listings)
ITM Fishing Show (according to tv3 listings)
The Wiggles Show (according to tv3 listings)
Heroes (until NBC asked for more money and TV3 declined to pay so back to SD)
Criminal Intent
Pushing Daisies
Lie To Me
Eleventh Hour
Journeyman
Dexter (until it was pulled from TV3)

Assorted movies on TV1/TV2/TV3 have had HD picture, not sure on surround. I would expect most US based shows to be available in HD, but NZ broadcasters would have the choice of which they decide to actually get in HD.

Also some of the shows look HD while others don't look as good as other HD shows. I suspect this is because of the different camera's and editing used by each production company. It could also be affected by downscaling/upscaling from local broadcasters as well.

please let me know if there are more or less, I will edit the list.

cheers

Thanks for that. Is Rove still HD? Some of these programs are not on anymore right? e.g. Lost.

Wouldn't be 100% on Rove, it was last season, and I don't see why they would go back to SD.

Yes Lost is not on right now as are a lot of other shows in that list. But they have been on in HD here before.

lchiu7: TVNZ does have some HD programming, but precious little

In their current schedules TVNZ broadcast The Mentalist, City Homicide, Fringe and Paradise Cafe in HD. Sunday Theatre is sometimes in HD, and the new series The Cult will be HD when it starts next week.

No 5.1 audio on TVNZ though.

Rove is SD this season and was in the last season as well. Season prior to that was HD.

Assuming prime time is 8-10 (in the US it's usually acounted as 8-11) for two networks, that's about 5 hours out of 28 - so precious little.

TV3 isn't much better averaging about 5 hours also but that's one channel.

Yes, it's a shame that they decided to make their other two channels SD only.

Not a shame at all, but rather an impossibility. If the net bandwidth of the DVB-T mux is 26 Mbps then it is obviously not possible to have 4 x 8 Mbps channels.

SVU is not HD.
Pushing Daisies is not HD - a real shame as this show would look awesome in HD.
Eleventh Hour is not HD.

Apparently (so I read a couple of weeks ago - Slow Start for High-Def TV), movies may air in high-def on TV One but never on TV2, whereas TV2 screens more drama series in high-def. Absolutely lame - there's been a number of movies on TV2 lately that would have been good with HD, ie The Incredibles last night, Spiderman 3 a couple of weeks ago... TVNZ have really been dragging their heels over the transition to HD, particularly with the lack of 5.1 surround sound

That's right in so far as 4 x 8 Mbps is greater than the 26 Mbps bandwidth of the DVB-T mux.

However Mediaworks broadcast three channels rather than four (TV3 C4 and TV3+1), giving scope for more than one of those to be HD. If they really wanted to 3 x 8 Mbps would fit within within the 26 Mbps bandwidth.
