I neither want maori TV nor have an interest in their ability to broadcast, but what irks me is that they will be doing this for the exposure and nothing more - how is this possibly going to benefit their language or the wider taxpayer?

It isn't. And where was the consultation? Oh that's right...it's Maori TV - there never is consultation.

The Big issue is that if TV3 etc got the rights it would still be on freeview but the taxpayer would not be footing the bill!!! Maori TV have put in a much larger Bid (of a taxpayer funded handout) which you can guarantee they will spend ever last dollar of (most likely on $400 undies etc
Why don't the freeview group put in a joint bid and bring back the sports channel?
Maori TV is not exclusive to Freeview it is on sky as well, so Sky win either way.

The difference is there are non government funded companies willing to foot the bill, & Maori TV have not got a good record for managing where they spend their money, you can guaranty that a lot of the $3 million will go towards exorbitant wages & expenses. (not that TVNZ is any better)

The bids from TVNZ and TV3 were based on a business case as to what they could afford to pay vs how much they could recoup in advertising.

I suspect maori TV's maximum bid is based on the hand out they could get from TPK.

Are the BBC or SBS allowed to bid against non government funded tv companies on sporting rights in their respective countries?

@DataCraft - Outside the major centres you can't get Prime on analogue anyway, so the difference between Prime and Maori TV is moot. Combined DVB-S/DVB-T coverage is practically 100%, and although you may need a set-top box for your crappy 14" TV, you will soon anyway...

I say they use the opportunity to push digital (either DVB-S or DVB-T) Freeview in preparation for an analogue switchoff in 2012 - Rugby may be a useful tool to drive the transition.

I agree with you 100%. If Maori TV get the rights this'll be the perfect opportunity to get people off analogue. The govt should be supporting this bid IMHO!

if Maori TV gets the bid, then I will fork out for Sky, yes it means ill be paying for Sky and Maori TV (through my tax) but I can live with that.

I think he was implying tv3 / sky (prime) not tvnz

pjshark: if Maori TV gets the bid, then I will fork out for Sky, yes it means ill be paying for Sky and Maori TV (through my tax) but I can live with that

I'll just change to the required channel on my freeview decoder
