Doesn't matter. It's the same scenario in Australia and likely most places around the world. It's their IP and that's that.

Hey most people here fully agree with the fact it's silly/stupid that they want to control information that benefits them if it's made more easily available, especially as they broadcast it in full via satellite as EIT and via sat and terrestrial as MHEG5 and via their own websites etc.

The point of most of the comments here however is simply to benefit yourself in regards to a legal standpoint.

What I would really like is some EPG data that flagged tv shows if they were in HD or not. No EPG data I have found does this.

Well, now there is! Just check out www.codycooper.co.nz/epg/, and hover over the program you would like to see. It will say either (SD) that is Standard Definition, or (HD) obviously High Definition.

I would like to be able to offer all of the currently avaliable channels, such as ONE, TV 2, 3, Prime, etc but can't yet due to licensing restricitions, if anybody could help in this respect please let me know!

It would be nice if i didn't have to put my mouse over it though. I want to see at a glance what is in HD. When you get the main channels it will be useful but until then I will just watch this space.

I assume you were contacted to remove the other TV channels?

The only way to display this content legally is to pay the broadcasters the $$ they want which is what newspapers and magazines such as TV guide do.

I'm sure the channels would give you access to their intellectual property (EPG) to distribute if you sign a contract and pay them $$'s :)

The TVNZ hosted Freeview XML files contain a HD flag as this data is used for the EPG on the STB and the Freeview website. The data is available, it just depends whether the app you're using for your EPG can deal with this field.

Some should listen reason a bit closer and sooner - even before starting some projects.

Do you know of any clients that can use this data. Im looking for a stand alone app. I use gb-pvr to record programes and that shows epg data but doesn't show HD flags. Thanks

No, I wasnt contacted by the other channels. I simply asked each and every one of them if we could have permission in one form or another and a few said Yes, so I added them.

Ah! It's up indeed. Sorry for that then. But yes, the main TV channels didn't come to the party. It's hard trying to do something cool when the companies reserve something like a lineup as their intelectual property...

Short of writing your own app there is no real way of doing it.

Do you use XMLTVNZ or similar or just use the pvr.geek.nz URL in the EPG location box?

I put in a request a long time ago with Reven (who wrote XMLTVNZ) to use the HD flag in the show title or desciption field if using the TVNZ listings as a source, I don't think anything happened with this.

If you're importing the pvr.geek.nz file this doesn't contain the HD field so there is nothing you can do.

I must be missing something here, but why is pvr.geek.nz able to redistribute an XML feed of the listings without (seemingly) having issues with the licensing?

Is is basically due to requiring some work to be done to make the listings usable?
