Yep I was certain it was stretched and taught him about the "smart-stretch" that TVs do.

Put it this way, it it was a widescreen transmission, then all the squarescreen owners would be complaining about tall and skinny instead.

Perhaps a good way to drive the sale of new tvs tho?

Well the answer to my question about anamorphic widescreen braodcasts over analogue was that it is possible so that's not exactly the only option.

They're "Letterboxed" from 16:9 to 14:9.
