is ther really anything wrong with the cloned knockoffs?

not overly, apart from as has been pointed out, they are not genuine Dream products.

The old adage of you get what you pay for applies very much.

If I was to buy a basic Dreambox like a DM500, i'd go for a DM518, they are a bit more robust.  However they are once again clones.

But if you're going to the effort of sourcing a Dreambox, probably better off to get a DM600, which isn't all that much more, and you can record to a hard drive.

FYI here a list of geniune Dream products.  The 500HD is very new, there is also a DM500+, but I haven't seen it listed anywhere in NZ/Au - http://www.dream-multimedia-tv.de/en/products
