Hi Gemini
Im in the process of trying my First DVD-R back up
I recorded Big Momma's house last night which was in HD on TV3
It's pretty much put the DVD-R in and hit copy on the remote for the recording you wish to convert, the Panasonic then prepopulates with the correct(optinum?) compression to fit on the DVD and its gonna take 213 minutes to convert and burn
You can change the compression to lower quality if needed

Have you enabled the DLNA, I found this to be very well designed and easy to use.

I don't think a two hour HD movie can be compressed enough using the MPEG4 "H" recording modes (HG, HX, HE, HL) to fit onto a 4.7GB DVD so it's probably converting it to SD MPEG2 (XP, SP, LP, EP) which might explain the huge conversion time.

Would be interested to know if you get an "H" recording mode (HG, HX, HE, HL) option if burning a smaller 30 min HD program to DVD.

I suspect Panasonic may have built in a software limitation preventing MPEG4 recording onto DVD as the XW380 does not have the "record HD to disc" feature.

I have a Panasonic DLNA tv. It has usb recording of the digital Freeview channels (not analogue tho). Looks like overseas you can use the epg to program these and do more than "record what I am watching now" but in NZ this seems crippled.

Kinda sad really.

shomenno: I am not convinced by the cheapish looks of the brands like ultraplus and topfield.

Whether a product looks attractive is a very personal thing, but in terms of functionality and reliability Topfield have a very good reputation in European markets.

What is the model of you TV? I'm guessing it has an inbuilt DLNA/UPnP client? If so, does it have Wifi connectivity back to the DLNA?UPnP server?

Yeah the TH-P50V20Z. Wired lan and you can get a wireless adapter as well. The Dlna on these tv's seems to be DLNA 1 not 1.5 so you have a lot wont play without trancoding.

Overall when they do play directly its very very nice. Still playing with media servers.

Why I was interested in this thread is that overseas the tv will use the usb recording (link is next model down but gives u an idea) to work as a fully fledged pvr. However the NZ model being Freeview certified has only now/next (eit/mpheg5 issue I realize) but it does not even let you select the program and record it (play tv style for example). It really is just record what I am looking at now and able to put the tv in standby while you do.

I will be very interested in what you think. I have both a MagicTV and a DMR-BW850. The BW850 I suspect will be very similar to the BW880, but of course the BW880 supports the Freeview EPG.

Can you please check for the following:

If 2 sequential programs are recorded on the MagicTV using one tuner, while the other tuner is also recording a different mux, all the programs can be set up to overlap each other. eg.
Tuner 1:
TV1 starts recording at 5:58 and finishes at 7:10. TV1 starts recording at 6:58 and finishes at 7:40.
Tuner 2:
TV3 starts recording at 5:58 and finishes recording at 7:10.

In other words, for a small period, it is actually recording 3 (or even 4) programs at the same time from 2 different channels/muxes.

Setting the same thing on the Panasonic BW850 gives the following:

Tuner 1:
TV1 starts recording at 5:58 and finishes at 6:59. TV1 then starts recording at 7:00 and finishes at 7:40.
Tuner 2:
TV3 starts recording at 5:58 and finishes at 7:10.

The Panasonic BW850 has a 1 minute break between concurrent recordings if the second tuner is also in use.

The Panasonic BW850 fast forward & rewind, and add skip forward backward are far superior to the MagicTV though.

Arg! My DMR-XW380 DLNA server has stopped providing audio (video only), I've sent an email to Panasonic to see if there was a recent update and if there is a subsequent fix coming or do I need to restore factory settings (not sure if that will actually roll out the update)
