System: Has there been any announcements so far on when the Freeview|HD coverage is going to increase?
richms: I am disgusted that people expect the taxpayer to subsidize the upgrading of the broadcasters viewers equipment.
The broadcasters are the ones that make money from having viewers, they are the one with paying customers wanting access to those viewers, they are the ones that should be paying for any settop boxes for customers.
IMO its time that the winz payments for televisions were ended as well, since again its not the govt that benifits from it, it is the broadcasters.

xarqi: I'm very sceptical about the "Freeview HD for everyone" claim. Very.
I live not 20 minutes from the centre of Auckland. I can't get UHF, so DVB-T is out.
Freeview NZ have said they have no plans at all for HD via satellite.
To achieve the claim, they'll have to:
- move Freeview HD to VHF (totally daft);
- install a UHF transmitter for every community currently in a UHF shadow (hugely expensive);
- provide very long poles for antennas in these areas (ludicrous);
- distribute content by cable or fibre (great idea, but not television);
- put up a new satellite (yeah, right);
- do a deal with Sky for unencoded transmission of Freeview content (hmmm - remember the effort it took to get Prime on Freeview at all?).
Only the last has any hint of feasibility, and I won't be holding my breath from 2013 until they can arrange that.
90% of the population? Maybe.
95%? Maybe.
100%? Not by 2013, and not using the methods they've announced.

It's a politics. The other thing is the the gov will be making billions from turning it off and selling the spectrum, and the TV companies will also be saving millions by not having to broadcast it, so somewhere inbetween there could be some subsidising going on. They have done it in other countries for this reason. I beleive the gov will be covering some insulation costs, but the installers will just put their prices up.
I protest that tax payers should be paying to give grants to insulate people houses, or be bailing out finance companies, but in the end it is all politics. Remember the gov are borrowing $36 million a day to support the economy.
robbyp:
Isn't it freeview for everyone, not freeview HD for everyone.
robbyp:
For the satellite version I managed to install satelitte freeview in a rural area for just $150 with everything including dish and STB. Some installers however charge the earth for this service.

Who claimed this? Freeview have certainly never claimed that everybody will get Freeview|HD.
richms: So some technologically inept publication says something wrong? nz herald has a big history of doing that, hardly new...
