Somebody told me that Sky don't actually 'own' Living, Food, Juice etc. Is that true? Would be nice if they could do deals with Freeview. Can't see it happening though - Sky will tie them up pretty tight with contracts I would think.

There is now a facebook group "TVNZ Please Keep Kidzone"

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/pages/TVNZ-Please-keep-Kidzone/120409804685934

(Sorry for plain URL, rich editor not available on iPad)

Please join, let's try to get some numbers that TVNZ will hopefully notice.
( I am not associated with the facebook group, other than liking it)

Cheers,
Joseph

freitasm: Taking away kids programmes to replace with something else already being provided by other channels is a stupid action.
+1

& and thanks for the facebook link too, appreciate it.

Our kids don't watch too much TV, but it's great to know that at any time you really need it there's a free quick baby sitter on hand throughout the day.  Inadvertently our two young ones have grown up to the Wot Wots etc and now really, would be silly to see this go in my opinion.

Visit the linked page anyway. The FaceBook page is public, you do not need to be logged in to see the contents.
Go to Discussions > What Can I Do?

Here you'll find the email address for Jonathan Coleman (Minister for Broadcasting) and a link to the TVNZ contact page.

Cheers,
Joseph.

GOODBYE FIREMAN SAM

State TV is making another push into the embattled advertising market.

Say goodbye to Fireman Sam on TVNZ 6 and hello to raunchy rock videos.

Under a plan being given advanced consideration by the Government, some TVNZ 6 programming will be folded into TVNZ 7 while the rest is dropped.

The abandoned capacity on 6 would be used for a commercial channel focused on youth.

Currently TVNZ 6 offers disparate programming with children through the Kidzone strand, family viewing and the arts.

Five years of taxpayer funding worth a total of $79 million runs out at the end of next year.

But sources say TVNZ wants the term to end early so TVNZ 6 can be turned into a commercial youth channel by March.

The Government is expected to announce the move before the end of this year.

The ongoing funding of public TV is still unclear and no decisions have been made yet whether to merge Radio New Zealand with TVNZ 7.

---------------

Interesting times ahead - it looks like the advertising market may be picking up, then? That would spur some development of Freeview content in the next few months...

What would you like to see TVNZ do with their 6 & 7 channels?

My Kids love Kidzone, but what exactly did $79 million pay for????? its all repeats includng the bits with kane the presenter, they just programme a couple of hours of shows which then loops through out the day, Talk about fleecing the taxpayer.

the kidzone is only part of the channel, not sure how much of that funding slice it took.  but then the wiggles didnt get rich by performing for free....

The funding was for two channels over about 4 years. That is relatively cheap and is a very small sum compared with what people funnel into Sky. New Zealand is almost unique in its unwillingness to pursue quality public television. There has developed a mindset in many social circles that not having a Sky subscription or flat panel television marks someone was a social "loser". The mindset can be seen in Freeview adverts where people without Sky are presumed to be and are treated as morons. Funding FTA television is seen as providing to an unworthy and undeserving social class.

If this campaign is noticed by TVNZ they'll probably assure you there'll still be a "Kidzone".

Expect it to have programming with names like "Beyblade" and "Kick Buttowski", interspaced by Barbie adverts.

As long as they leave Nova Science on I don't really care what they do with the rest as my kids have all grown up and left home..

Oh my kids will be gutted. They love the shows on Kidzone. Plus Kayne Peters is a personal friend. It will be a sad day when it ends.

+1 on the Facebook petition!

I know, and its not just the old videos that they have not cropped either.

When you complain they tell you that its because the videos are not widescreen. Funny, they look widescreen to me, just with 4" of black on every side of it.

The Kidzone campaign has made The Herald today
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10685690

I don't think there's much chance of the present Kidzone staying. The government won't want to fund TVNZ6, TVNZ wants to run advertisements on it, and advertisers want an audience old enough to market to.

Kids are great to market to, some people just dont like the idea of it - see the banning of happy meals and restrictions on food advertising in kids shows etc.
