GOODBYE FIREMAN SAM

State TV is making another push into the embattled advertising market.

Say goodbye to Fireman Sam on TVNZ 6 and hello to raunchy rock videos.

Under a plan being given advanced consideration by the Government, some TVNZ 6 programming will be folded into TVNZ 7 while the rest is dropped.

The abandoned capacity on 6 would be used for a commercial channel focused on youth.

Currently TVNZ 6 offers disparate programming with children through the Kidzone strand, family viewing and the arts.

Five years of taxpayer funding worth a total of $79 million runs out at the end of next year.

But sources say TVNZ wants the term to end early so TVNZ 6 can be turned into a commercial youth channel by March.

The Government is expected to announce the move before the end of this year.

The ongoing funding of public TV is still unclear and no decisions have been made yet whether to merge Radio New Zealand with TVNZ 7.

---------------

Interesting times ahead - it looks like the advertising market may be picking up, then? That would spur some development of Freeview content in the next few months...

What would you like to see TVNZ do with their 6 & 7 channels?

I cant say I have ever watched more than about 30 seconds of TVNZ 6 - the sooner they stop funneling taxpayer money into it the better.

IMO, maori TV have shown they can do it as a public broadcaster, TVNZ, well. yeah... no.

Perhaps tvnz can sort out that disaster of an overnight service on 7 while they are rejigging things?

Sorry, but I would have to disagree, as 'Regs' says if you have kids TVNZ is a great channel, and if you don't want to blow money into Sky's pocket for Disney, Nick, etc, it's the only real choice.  I would hate to see the loss of the Kidzone portion, although I wod admit I havn't watched anything else on TVNZ6!

But 'targeted at youth'? Does that mean ANOTHER channel just like TV3/C4 since they are changing their focus too?  Yippee.

There are a few documentaries on 6.

The structure the last government set up for these channels was never going to fully work. TVNZ is being run as a commercial operator instead of a public broadcaster so they do not want viewers to watch TVNZ6 and 7 because there are no advertisements. Both channels have only had token publicity. From TVNZ's standpoint, they'd almost rather shut down TVNZ6 than continue running it as it is.

"Commercial youth channel" will probably mean a sleazy C4 clone full of Jackass and Hannah Montana type programming for the embetterment of the next generation....

TVNZ6 and Kidzone is a market driver for FreeView from my perspective. I see a lot of folk on the breadline asking about freeview with kidszone as a child minder as an important driver

While Bella doesn't watch much TV - she's always building something or at pre-school, TVNZ6 has been the destination for her if she is ever in front of the box.

Taking away kids programmes to replace with something else already being provided by other channels is a stupid action.

Ill add my voice to the 'keep TVNZ6 as it is' brigade.

My kids are 3, 7 and 10 and after having the first two in the UK being able to watch CBeebies, TVNZ6 has been a god send. Id be surprised if the kids watch more than a couple of hours of TV a week anyway, but if they do they always ask for Kidzone.

No ads, no violence (not that a good RoadRunner wouldnt go amiss every now and then!) and no music videos with half naked women stutting about. Brilliant.

God I sound old !

Have to agree - Kidzone is brilliant, especially for rainy days. I would hate to see another C4 if thats what they meant.

We will be very upset if Kidzone goes. The childrens programing for under 5's is much better on TVNZ6 than any of the sky channels, that we also have

+1 for Kidzone, it's great to know if the kids are watching it, then it is ALL child friendly.
Lots of New Zealand content and "edu-tainment" for kids also.
I would be very sad to see Kidzone changed, it is the ONLY channel in our house the kids are allowed to watch.

People without young kids may well not realize how AMAZINGLY full of advertisements, hard sell, and branding the other channels can be when kids are watching.

Kidzone is commercial free, and I very much appreciate it.
Perhaps a petition may be required, sigh.

Cheers,
Joseph

I don't even have kids, but i'm in on doing something about this. (I install Freeview and a large portion of customers get it just for kidzone)

I have to agree. I don't watch TVNZ6 myself, but I do a lot of Freeview Installs, and a lot appreciate the fact that it is there.

Slightly off-topic, but if Freeview included a couple more 'niche' channels (Heartland would have been great), they could actually start to do some damage to Sky - I would get rid of Sky if Freeview had a UKTV or BOX-type channel or two. Not just Music Videos or TV3 delayed by an hour...

Oh so true!  With something like UKTV and BBC World (which is available on Satellite for free anyway, so why not on Freeview???), and maybe the Living Channel, it would be a service I am sure would appeal to many current Sky subscribers.  And yeah, Heartland is a real loss for Freeview - I can only see political motivations for not having it on Freeview - probably too much money coming as kickbacks from Sky ;-)

With my HTPC I have both DVB-T and DVB-S, which gives me all the basic Freeview channels plus the SBS ones (and a proper 7 day guide!!!) - having those free extras would make it 100% better.

That's not political, that's business.

Better that TVNZ get a return on their old stuff in the form of payments from sky (whose customers have no choice in getting the channel) then send it out at a loss as would happen if it was on freeview.
