richms: IMO if they are making three target old people now, they should move the HD gear over to FOUR when it launches and turn 3 SD if they are short of money for new kit.

Absolutely.

With the extra advantage that if they have the rights to any sports event (eg Bathurst) they can show it live & uninterrupted on FOUR while the older set can watch their usual stuff (news etc) on TV3...

Also: TVNZ may have missed a step here by not firing-up Sports Extra for the ASB Tennis this week......

In regards to the ASB Classic, I found it appalling that they cut the coverage of the main game with the top seed to screen the news. I wish it was on Sky. Free to air always screw up the sport

Precisely.

Australia's Freeview is fortunate to have their 'One HD' channel (an HD sports channel, free to air) largely due to the anti-syphoning laws over there.

Here, Sky has just about all the live sport sealed-up.. So a dedicated Sports channel on Freeview is highly unlikely. :-(

Doesn't stop them from preempting programming on another digital channel though.

Do you think anyone would mind if TVNZ had played the match on TVNZ7?

Only those still on analog, but it might be things like that which motovate them to sort it out before switchover.

I do feel sorry for those in areas that are not covered yet but will be before analog switch off since there is little reason for them to rush out and get digital right now only to have to replace it with HD when it arrives.

I've noticed since new years that C42 has no EPG info (not the mheg one) with it

Good point.. if we're serious about getting people to switch to digital, there needs to be exclusive content that is desirable

Besides Kidzone and the odd show on TVNZ7, there's little of value that's going to convince the average analogue viewer to switch.

hopefully Freeview HD is rolled out to all the new centres before Rugby World Cup, and the lure of free HD rugby will further drive uptake.
