valtam: yeh, when I saw it was to be imported from China, it was an immediate 'red flag' (no pun intended).
Besides the issues with warranties etc as previously mentioned here, and without getting to political, I hope people start looking to import products from countries whose economies really needs the boost, instead I'm afraid people will continue to import products that place more importance on wider profit margins than humanitarian issues such as human rights abuses, labour rates, working conditions, these kind of things.
(I think I just got political!) Hell, they just kicked Skype out of China, I mean, wtf?? You can still make a good profit importing from other countries and I'm glad you're reconsidering your desire to pursue this product.

[rant] Buy local! Buy NZ made! Buy NZ manufactured![/rant]

No, Skype wasn't kicked out of China. That's a hoax.

And "Buy NZ manufactured" is nothing but impossible when it comes to these kinds of products.

On this note, have you folks looked at the quality of European products, made in Europe (not "designed in Europe, made in China"). Even the packaging is beautiful and the products themselves are of much better quality.

No wonder they cost a bit more. And no wonder some companies use Chinese plants to manufacture those low quality things they sell.

Gotta say, based on the very slim margins I was looking at, importing from anywhere else except maybe HK was never going to fly.  While the NZ consumer expects such a massive feature set for so little outlay, I'd doubt anywhere else is going to be able to provide the low manufacturing costs to be able to pull it off.

Love the avatar btw ;)

I see, what is your source for the reported hoax? I'm just curious as the news I received was mainly from China based sites, unlike them to put out misinformation Tongue out Sorry to veer off topic thread starter.

dinsdale1: Why don't you approach a local company to distribute on your behalf. A company that already specialises in such equipment, and not necessarily a big retailer. Remember the consumers guarantee act and providing back up and warranty for at least a year as well. Importing from China can be very hit and miss, we find it a lot easier to have a local ex-pat here to go through

Well, that's a possibility as it's already an established brand (I won't name names, still hoping to do something useful with this idea) so there is already distributors bringing in their kit.

OK, just heard back on the first set of questions;

Positives: Fully MPEG-4 / MPEGII / MHEG-5 / H.264 compatible with NZ standards. May need some tweaking to get the MHEG-5 EPG to display but they are willing to work through that once I have a test unit.

Product killer: single DVB-T tuner. The "dual tuners" off the spec sheet are 1x DVB-T, 1x Analog.

This is now a dead duck from my point of view, as the dual-tuner feature is a requirement to help position the unit at the higher end of the market. Without that, it's a $500 at most which falls well short of the unit import costs.

It also means that no other disti will do it either, as even with established logistics lines from Shenzhen the product doesn't have a high enough expected retail value to even cover buying costs.

A shame really, but gave me something to do with my holiday while I endured the Queensland downpours!

Thanks all, really appreciate the feedback from all ppl.

It is still encouraging that an MHEG-5 product like this exists even if it is missing a second tuner because Moore's law means a double tuner product will reach us sooner or later. They should be made aware a double tuner product is required as it might encourage them to think more about it despite how small our market is.

Agreed, and advised them exactly that. I said "a dual-DVB-T tuner model is required to be able to place the product into the higher end of the PVR market. Customers can purchase single-tuner models, plus a blu-ray player, plus a media player, for less than I can buy your unit".
