I think I is likaly to be a problem with my receiver I will double check how things are connected as the apple TV seems to be passing 5.1 via HDMI through the TV. But that's not ment to be possible

Judging from the way my Sony works (and like you I didn't think 5.1 passthrough was possible) I would say there is nothing wrong with your set up.
If the TV is passing thru the Apple TV Audio as 5.1 then the TV settings are fine and you just have to wait until you get a TV3 program that is actually 5.1 to see what happens. Most TV3 stuff is, as someone else said, stereo in a 5.1 wrapper and will only go to the amp as Stereo. Hence your amp says 5.1 and the TV says and is 2.0.
In other words all is working as it should.

OK watching NCIS and it is still saying Dolby 2.0 but the rear speakers are working. I think I need to find the mic and reset the levels.

Thanks for all the help from all involved. Still don't know why star trek was not working though

sbiddle: I wonder if Samsung have actually enabled AC3 in their TV's yet? Certainly up until a year ago you could only select the AAC audio.

Bit late but yes they haz AC3.

Bit late but yes they haz AC3.

They actually had the ability to switch between AAC and AC3 in in their early series 5 and series 6 DVB-T TV's ~3 years ago. SUddenly new firmware for these models and newer models after this all lost the ability, and nobody I'd ever been able to contact on this issue could ever find out why this occured.

Did anyone notice a lack of centre channel on TV3 during Miami Vice last night?

Dialogue was coming through on the Front Left and Right channels for most of the time, but at other times there was silence when people were talking.
The centre channel was just completely dead.

I don't think any of my receiver settings have changed.
I was watching through Play TV on the PS3.

Hi and don't panic. That movie was stereo not 5.1 so your system is probably fine.

So I wonder why there was a lack of dialogue for a lot of the film?
Seems to me that it should have been coming out of the centre channel.

There would only be a centre channel if you were using prologic. As for the missing voices, this is a mystery, should all have come out front left and right for stereo.

Did you have it recorded? When I have problems, I set up a recording so I can try different settings on playback.

I was actually watching it from a recording off PlayTV. Don't actually have the recording anymore as it wasn't worth watching due to the lack of dialogue, and to be honest I wasn't really getting into it.

The thing is, the PS3(fat 40GB)/PlayTV outputs to my receiver in PCM when the source is TV3 (aka Dolby digital).
As everything else seems to be playing fine sound wise now, I still reckon it was something to do with the way TV3 was broadcasting it. Maybe a flag not set properly somewhere?
