Seems to be OK here with my Sony TV and Amp.
The Amp shows Dolby Digital and the Blue light is lit up.
You only hear sound from the rear speakers when they are actually transmitting a program that has 5.1 sound content and there's not many that do yet.

This is perfectly normal. The shows you are watching are obviously not in 5.1

TV3 broadcast fulltime AC3 5.1 however all stereo content is still broadcast as 2 ch stereo within a 5.1 wrapper so will only have the FL and FR speakers active.

Any shows that are in 5.1 and/or HD will have a logo at the start.

Star Trek certainly was broadcast with 5.1 sound. I watched my recording of the film a couple of nights ago, and thought that some of the surround sound effects were particularly good.

I wonder if Samsung have actually enabled AC3 in their TV's yet? Certainly up until a year ago you could only select the AAC audio.

When you view TV3 does it show AAC or AC3 as the audio format and catch you switch between them?

I had this problem with my new Sony EX720 when I set it up a couple of momths back.
Couldn't get 5.1 sound from TV3 until I got into the menu and changed the Audio out parameter to Sound system instead of speakers. With speaker out selected it only outputs PCM via optical. A couple of other audio paramaters in the menu will turn 5.1 off too if set incorrectly. The iManual isn't much help in this respect.
Likewise 5.1 audio input to the TV via the HDMI will not feedthrough the optical out in 5.1 unless the Speakers are turned off and all the other parameters are set correctly. Just get PCM instead.Took some time to figure out the correct settings.
It's also taken me two months to figure out how to get my old Sony Amp to decode PCM properly. The audio level from TV1 & TV2 was way below that from TV3 until I found a work around setting the other day.
I think it's about time I got a new amp with HDMI connectors.

when watching tv3 it has the option of HE-AAC 2.0 and dolby digital 2.0. I will have a look next time a hd show is on and try turning the speakers off.

Just asking the obvious question so don't hate me - were you watching TV3 or TV3+1?

Haha no prob yea I was watching tv3 I know 3+1 is not HD/5.1.

I think I is likaly to be a problem with my receiver I will double check how things are connected as the apple TV seems to be passing 5.1 via HDMI through the TV. But that's not ment to be possible

I would tend to focus on the TV.  You said the TV is showing 2.0 and the receiver is showing 5.1.  This makes me think it is a TV problem as the receiver thinks it is getting a 5.1 signal.

What sort of cable are you using to feed the audio to the receiver?  Do you have a different type you can try?

OK, forget about trying other cable types, if it won't work on optical my bet would be the TV is not sending the correct signal for some reason.
