dontpanic42: I'm not sure if this is related, but I had a notification pop up last night on my PS3 PlayTV saying that a new channel called 'Channel North' was available.

Channel North is our local Whangarei station and has only been available on analogue UHF until now! '
I doubt that would be one of the 'good' channels coming as it is probably only going to be broadcast on digital UHF in Whangarei but I could be wrong.

An article in the Northern Advocate said something about 2013 for Channel North... so is it already on Freeview?  Maybe just in Northland at the moment?  Although Im like 20km out of Whangarei city, and can't get FreeviewHD lol

The ChannelNorth website says Freeview CHannel 35 so I assume it live.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

I agree, I would much rather have TVNZ7 than a Shopping channel.

And actually Court Report can be pretty good too. They can end up discussing some interesting stuff.

MurrayM: I was watching a really old (1950's I think) black and white movie on Stratos (I think) the other night and I thought what Freeview could do with is a dedicated classic movie channel. Should be dirt cheap to get the material, the sort of stuff that the Warehouse has on DVD for $1.99 a disc...

I asked about such a channel before Mediaworks set up 3+1; but the reply was that it would not be commercially viable. It is interesting then that this is exactly what has happened in Australia; they have 2 or 3 stations that have been set up with mostly old TV series and movies. We have one available here in Go!; they also have 7mate and 11 which play a lot of this content too. If it works there, why couldn't it here?

$1.99 is for private viewing. I am sure it costs a lot more for a broadcaster to rebroadcast that content. ALso doesn't sky have such a channel, and they have possibly got the content wrapped up for that too.Really the problem is content.
The only channel I watch live is tvnz 7 these days, it has some good stuff, and the news is more indepth too. I wonder why they don't have advertising on it after june. It seems like it is more valuable if it is closed down and replaced with a shopping channel.

I see Stratos is how the TV series The Untouchables (1959) with Robert Stack 8.30pm Thursdays. Just watched the 2 hour pilot. Haven't see these since the NZBC days when I was at school. Hope they show all 4 seasons..

Just wish that they would learn the difference between 4x3 and 16x9 presentations.. 4x3 in "FatoVision" is terrible..

Er, no it doesn't. "Wall to wall power selling" sounds awful. Infomercials are bad at the best of times (and the best of times for them is between midnight and 6am where they belong).

It's just the cheap way out because the infomercial people pay them rather than them having to buy decent content isn't it?

Some people might find it enjoyable.
For the others who don't, there is always the remote.

Not aways. From what I saw of when Sky had a shopping channel they had a studio setup with some wannabe host doing an infomercial type of presentation which would last about 15 minutes then move on to the next sound stage..

If it is broadcast live, could end up having some funny 'poop' happen.. you would have to watch all the time though..
