Gilco2: Both have the s2 tuners so receive the sbs hd transmissions.

Actually, SBS HD uses DVB-S, not DVB-S2, not that that affects the discussion here.

okay thats interesting to know. I had been informed it was dvb-s2. I dont have a standard dvb-s tuner to test it. Regardless the dishtv s7090pvr and the ultraplus x-9200hd do have the dvb-s2 tuners and when they were broadcasting was able to get 9 gem and go aussie channels that were on dvb-s2 so if for some strange reason they came back it will be able to receive them.

HTPC Intel Pentium G3258 cpu, Gigabyte H97n-wifi motherboard, , 8GB DDR3 ram, onboard graphics. Hauppuage HVR 5500 tuner, Silverstone LC16M case, Windows 10 pro 64 bit using Nextpvr and Kodi

Yeah - there is an idea floating around that DVB-S2 is needed for HD, maybe because SKY's HD broadcasts use it, but it isn't so. You can check at http://www.lyngsat.com/optusd1.html for confirmation if you like.
As you say, the Ch9 services also used DVB-S2, but I don't think we'll be seeing them back any time soon.

Close. Yeah SBS HD is DVB-S, but HD DVB-S, so a standard DVB-S set top box won't be able to display them.

It looks like I'm learning something here too. I didn't know that there were "flavours" of DVB-S.
When looking at the specifications of a box, what would be the sure sign that it could receive HD DVB-S?

mpeg2 is just standard def DVBS and mpeg4 is HD or SD

Yet SBS HD is DVB-S, MPEG2, 720p.

I use an UltraPlus 9200 daily for everything from general viewing to all my recording. The timeshifting is running all the time and is a great feature being able to pause live programming and FR back to something you may have missed

I also use this receiver for all my feed hunting. Being a DVB-S2 receiver it picks up everything, SD, HD, Mpeg2, Mpeg4 just everything.

It's blindscan is very fast and all cards work in the slots which are features the Dreambox and Vu+ Duo don't have. I've have Dreamboxes and a Vu Duo and all are great to use but not for your average person that only wants to watch TV.

There's 2 yrs warranty on the 9200 and regular firmware updates with new features all the time. You can't ask for much better support than that from a manufacturer/supplier!
The latest firmware's new feature is Internet TV streaming. The quality isn't that bad either!

As stupid as it might sound:

SD/standard/basic channels - DVB-S

HD channels - DVB-S2

That's about it, as the DVB-S2 unit will be able to handle HD, it will also cover the HD DVB-S broadcasts.
You'd be hard pressed to find a DVB-S only unit that could do HD DVB-S, so it's simpler just to work on DVB-S2 which will do it all.

The sad fact is that in NZ there is not a lot of spill from nearby countries without going to semi crazy measures regarding dish size etc. We're surrounded by water, not other countries, - The opposite to like say Europe etc. So there's not that much HD to fish for, unless you like occasional feeds, non English language channels or religion 24 hours a day.

OK, but that's essentially a coincidence, that all boxes capable of receiving DVB-S in HD also happen to support DVB-S2, is that what you mean?

Essentially the same, just the other way around. If it can do DVB-S2 then it will also happen to support HD DVB-S.

Well, I disagree very strongly, based on an appalling experience with an Ultraplus product and supplier. It was the worst retail/support experience I can recall and was eventually resolved through the provisions of the Consumer Guarantees Act.

P.S.
Actually, now I think on it, my Ultraplus experience was worse even than that which followed hard on its heels, when I ordered a Vu+ from a supplier who ended up in prison for fraud!

My experience has and still is very postitive. Maybe you got a pup, and that sometimes happens. Even the older receivers like my 980 that are no longer sold are still being supported.
I can still get parts easily for my UltraPlus receivers, not sure I could get parts for my Vu Duo locally and my Chinese Dreamboxes, well I would just chuck'em lol
All good feed back for the OP to take into consideration.

I know that occasionally a bad unit comes off the line. When it does, it is usually rectified quickly and in a civil manner.

That's not at all what happened in my case. The problems ran much, much deeper, involving the design, manufacturing, and testing of the model prior to release to the market, and the abusive and utterly unprofessional conduct of the retailer that emerged when it became clear that I couldn't be fobbed off with the standard "I've sold hundreds of these and nobody else has complained" line. However, no amount of bravado could prevent him being non-plussed when he found that 3 of 4 units in his stock wouldn't power up properly!

If you are happy with your product and your purchase/support experience, then I'm happy for you.

pup = dud, whatever you would like to call it.

You seem to have intimate contact with the manufaturer if you're familar with the design, manufactruing and testing of these receivers. Is it possible if we make suggestions you can pass them on?

Maybe the retailer is who you have your beef with. I bought a Commodore once and never again but it's because of the way I was treated by the dealer/retailer not the actual manufacturer.

Anyway, I've played with many receivers over the years from Humax, Strong, and evern the newer Openbox and the UltraPlus runs rings around them.
