I watched a couple of movies yesterday on my SmartVu and the picture stalled after about 2 hours... The metal can was very hot.

I noticed that the metal shield on one side of the PCB assembly was actually clipped on to a sub frame.

So, it was out with my trusty pocket knife to spring the shield off.

More thermal tape .... from the ICs to a poor radiator - the shiny shield cover. More possiblities to glue on decent heat sinks.

Has anyone tried Parsec or Steam Link on these? I'm potentially looking at replacing my nVidia Shields for local support for lightbox, spark sport etc. I use the sheilds to stream games to the tvs with the controller passed through using usb over IP... Also, is the ondemand system for freeview up and running yet?

Sorry, also how well does Kodi run? I had a mibox 4K and it wouldn't run kodi at all well however the shields have no issues.

I have Kodi set up on my smartvu and it works fine I installed an APK which had the build and add one all complete and it works fine! I also us Sportz Tv very cheap $22 a month and gives you roughly 7000 channels it run fine also.

Freeview on demand is up and running also

What about interlaced 1080i content? The Mi Box struggled with Kodi at the time, but that might have been a lack of optimisation for the Android TV platform at that time.

Got my replacement device today. New ones running a bit cooler - its not almost burning to the touch which is good! So far no wifi drops, no pops and crackles, seems to be good. I also got myself a fan to sit it on, with it running the whole thing is barely above room temperature. Just a little noisy.

Looks like it needs a heatsink. Maybe attach one of these and cut a little hole in the case.

My guess it is WiFi chip causing a heat problem, I would try to use ethernet and see what's happening

I tried my chromecasts one and that appeared to be working.

I have had a closer look at the chips used in the SmartVU X. It is an awesome bit of PCB engineering with 4 ICs and a WiFi-BT module.

The thermal pads are attached to the 2 Ram chips and the Android TV chip.

The 2 Ram chips are bonded (by BGA) to either side of the PCB - effectively stacked in the same area either side of the PCB.

There is chip under the shield frame which I am guessing is a Samsung Flash chip as I can only see part of the numbering. No thermal pad on this chip.

No attempt has been made to remove heat from the WiFi-BT module which is in a metal can.

With a little active cooling my new one ran perfect for a good 4-5 hours last night - now Im just waiting for a speed controller for the USB fan cause its LOUD! No wifi dropping, no popping or glitching - even on plex it ran perfectly. Couldnt work out for the life of me why YouTube was running like crap though (was trying to run some 4k stuff). Turns out my VDSL had resynced at stupid low speed, modem restart later and all was good again! Only issue I now have is Netflix doesnt want to work. Comes up with a tvq-pm-100 when you try to play anything. Guess a factory reset might be in order today!

Its disappointing that you have to resort to these efforts to keep them cool. My nVidia Shields and mi box run nice and cool but it appears they've packed too much in to a small space.

Newbie, evening, I am desperately looking to find out if the smartVu apk can be used on a Sony oled for the freeview ondemand...
They are incredibly well priced but don’t have the app... apparently Sony are speaking with Freeview.
I did read earlier on in the discussion that someone may have managed to get a hold of the apk?!!my question is has anyone tried loading onto a Sony android tv?

No need for the app, there are plenty of other approaches that do exactly tyhe same thing including using TVirl for IPTV channels which IMHO is a far superior solution as it's integrated a lot better into the TV.

Matt Huisman's site contains full details for configuring and installing this.
