The bad news
First, the bad news: It is just a demo.

Freeview technology manager Tim Diproseconfirmed there is no launch timetable.

The company hopes its shareholders, including TVNZ and TV3 and Four broadcasterMediaWorks, will get in behind it. But so far it is only at the point of them showing interest - although apparently this is building.

So freeview are schilling vapourware on the off chance they can get some of their backers to come up the reddies to make these new shiny options.

.. and while they are at it they spike the attraction of Igloo, (whose boxes I am told will not let you do any timeshifting- I mean do they think this is still the '90s)

freitasm: We'll also be unveilling our brand new High Definition Electronic Programme Guide - a first for New Zealand audiences - and talk about new channels in the pipeline for the Freeview platform.

Has anyone been able to find any information on these new channels? I'm aware of Firstlight but what else is there?

Voice TV & Shine TV have test channels on the Sky Tower transmitter.

Canterbury TV on their website say they are "Going Digital Soon!".

ronw: Well I have never seen a basic STB with an ethernet port. I have here a DSE STB which is the Zinwell
rebranded and no etherenet port. I also have a homecast 7000 and no port. I agree that some PVR's have
ethernet ports but the Freeview certification does not require one. Its a pity they did not include this in the specs but they did not so all those that purchased the early STB's that were certified will not have an ethernet port.
Its a bit sad that the original certification did not also include a pay card provision as well but I guess they
were scared of people latching onto that and accusing them of not being freeview.

Zinwell's have an ethernet port, and my understanding is an ethernet port is part of the spec - I've never seen an STB that doesn't have one.

My DishTV T1050 has a lan port but in most cases its impossible to use you need a WiFi port like most of the modern and old stuff (Tivo) has.

Some one mention Igloo that used the modern DVB-T2 system that the UK use.

Behodar: The NBR article is no longer paywalled.

This in not the New Freeview But Igaloo runs on a different system DVB-T2
so forget about your STB as I think that SKY will be selling these boxes.

DVB-T2 supports more channels (11) on the same frequency that was needed for Igaloo

Plus the problem of ISP metered data
